I wanted to see if anyone has attempted to use a stock style air filter box for an ls swap on our cars? I saw mention of someone using a Lingenfelter GTO partition setup, and that person said that a stock GTO air filter setup would work, too. It would be pretty cool to have the cleanliness of an air filter box, and be able to switch disposable air filters out easily.
A lot of folks use a cone style and place it somewhere behind the headlights. The problem with an newer style airbox is airflow. An airbox usually gets a lot of air directed through the fender or another wide open area in the front end. Our cars don't have that really. Cone styles are also fairly cheap and can be cleaned and reused countless times.
Yeah, I kind of figured that's the way it is. I saw mention of a Spectre 9900 CAI fitting nicely in our cars, so I think I'll probably end up going with that then.
Would creating a partition piece and sealing it up against the hood also cut off airflow pretty badly in our cars? I guess it's not much different than an airbox at that point. Bit concerned about heat soak, but I've seen several members who don't use partitions or anything.
Take a look at the Detroit Speed Car and see what they did. They made a custom air box behind the driver side headlight area as to avoid any heat soak from the engine bay. That is about as custom as you'll get. My plan is to run a filter inside the nose/front fender area and make a box on the underside of the car.
I wanted mine to look stock. I hate the look of shiny tubing and k&n filters so I made a trip to the junkyard lol. Air filter and box from a buick roadmaster(sucks air in from front of box and i put air inlet sensor where they had pcv hose connected on boxlid) the rubber offset hose is from a 08 dodge ram & the pipe with the 90 is from a late 90's cadillac sts. A little tight crossing upper radiator hose so I used a hose made for 04 dodge neon and it fits better offsetting towards radiator more and fits perfect no trimming
Shifty, that is a good shout. The seperator plate they made is very nice! Sounds like a bit of work to pipe an air intake all the way down there! But that sounds like the best option for air flow in our cars.
2knight, thank you! That looks fantastic! That seems to a be a great inexpensive option. I think I may have to copy that...
It only cost 25 bucks but alot of searching to see what would work. The hard parts done lol. I was going to put a hole in the bottom of airbox and use a holesaw to cut through tray area and use a gasket to seal it up and draw in cooler air. I didn't do it because i didn't want to cut it up in case plans would ever change. Air temps stay cooler than k&n setup as is though so I'm satisfied and it was cheap and i think it looks as stock as possible.

Good job! The main thing is that the intake hose size is suitable
@2knight thanks again for the input and for figuring out the hard part! I was able to find all three parts of the setup on eBay for about $70. Not too bad for not having to pull everything myself!
ebay is the lazy way lol. Glad i could help. I did have to heat up elbow that connects to throttle body with a heat gun and stretch it and it fit very tight but it will fit after stretching.
