Cam stuck

Hey guys, I have a lq4 basically completly stripped down, all thats left is the cam, crank along with the pistons. I am having a very difficult time removing the camshaft, I have some long bolts attached to it for leverage but i can only wiggle out a third of the way. Could there be an issue with the camshaft bearings?

Re: Cam stuck

Turn the crank a quarter turn or so.

Lobes can hang up on rods.

If that doesn't work, try a slide hammer, and be ready to replace the cam bearings after the one in question comes out with the cam.

Re: Cam stuck

I take the timing chain off, then put the cam gear back on and use it to remove the cam. Keep slowly rotating it, & rotating it, while carefully pulling it forward.
The mechanical fuelpump pushrod isnt still in there by chance?

Re: Cam stuck

Just put the cam gear back on the cam with the 3 bolts. Finger tight is fine. No chain. Then use the cam gear to rotate the cam by hand, as you lightly pull the cam forward. It will move the lobes to different positions when you rotate the cam so you can slide them through the cam bearings more easily.

Re: Cam stuck

I had a hard time getting the cam out of my LQ4, wound up that one cam bearing had come out of position with the cam and was getting hung up. You will probably have to pull hard and turn the cam at the same time. Maybe even set the block on end so the bearing isn't stuck on a lobe or journal while you're pulling

redneckjoe, I thought it said LG4 also, lol

This. Also, take the rear cover off and look in from the back. You should be able to see the other side of the cam and what it might be hanging on or if there is a bearing that walked out and jammed against a lobe.

This is what I'd do. It's AHELLUVALOT eeeeezyer to persuade reluctant parts by pushing, than by pulling on them.

I'm guessing a bearing will come out along with the journal it's involved with. You'll probably have to cut the bearing in half to get it off, to then get the cam the rest of the way out.
