91 305 tbi to 96 vortec
91 305 tbi to 96 vortec
I have a 91 rs roller only thing missing is the motor and transmission, was originally a 305 tbi car. I want to take the motor and transmission out of a 96 gmc 1500 it's a 350 vortec is there anything I have to change out to make this work. I have both the wiring harness and computer for both vehicles.
Re: 91 305 tbi to 96 vortec
This is a long one.
I'm planning on doing the same thing from my 1999 express van; Ive done upgrades before. Your changing over the engine and transmission, you will also be looking at matching the ring and pinion gear ratios, fuel pump, ECM, body control module, (ECM security feature will look for a matching vin on the BCM and wont allow the engine to start without it) Also having a driveshaft built to handle the extra 100 HP. I'm using the aluminum drive shaft from the van.and paying an axle/drive line shop to match it up. $200 all in and on the road; keep the donor vehicle until you are done.
You will have a major wiring job ahead of you so MOST IMPORTANT Get dealer service manuals for BOTH vehicles. They might set you back a couple hundred but they are worth their weight in gold and they work everywhere.I got mine on Ebay just make sure it is a paper manual and they are licensed by GM to reprint and/or distribute. PDF copies at your own risk.
Don't let anyone BS you about the cast iron heads; They are rugged as an axe head also, the1996 build year the heads were improved the 96 5.7 was the first year to have roller cams also the engine, trans, and ECM tune is set up to move a 8000- 10,000 lb truck, a Camaro is 3000 lbs you have plenty of HP out of the box. I have a 1999 and the heads heads flow awesome. Check the engine and head casting numbers with a dealership parts dept or reputable engine machine shop and they will let you know which ones you have.
Good Luck and have fun.
