83 Camaro Alt & P/S bracket dilemma.

Hi folks. I'm installing a sbc into a guy's 83 Camaro. He bought the car with the engine sitting in the engine bay with just the engine mount bolts in and the trans held up with a chain. All hardware and brackets were in boxes. My biggest problem is that there are 4 different upper alt brackets in the mess and various different types of small bracketry also. I can't figure this mess out for the life of me. The top brackets don't come close to lining up to the manifold although they will bolt onto the waterpump. I need some pics guys! Alternator and P/S mounting if you have them. We're not sure what year engine it is but I assume that the heads and blocks are drilled the same right? Also it has an Edlebrock intake on it and I'm not sure if it might be missing holes for the brackets either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Wally.

Re: 83 Camaro Alt & P/S bracket dilemma.

Welcome. I'm attaching several pictures of the brackets off of my 87 TPI engine. Your set-up will be slightly different, but similar enough that you should be able to figure out how everything bolts together. Like a puzzle, the parts only fit one-way, so once you start getting some of the brackets in place, it will be easy to see what bolts to what and to where. Most, if not all of the bolts and studs will be 3/8-16 threads; studs are in the pictures too.

The alternator bracket is pretty simple. The upper bracket bolts to the top of the water pump, but I'm not sure where or how the 2nd mounting point (on the back of the bracket, barely visible in the picture) will bolt to the carb'd intake manifold. The lower bracket's 2 bolts attach to the front water pump. And there's a 6" bolt with a 3" spacer that bolts through alternator case and into the cylinder head. Like I said, yours may vary, but it will be similar.

BTW, that lower bracket on the front of the water pump doubles as one of the AIR pump brackets. But if you're installing an AIR pump too, then there are more brackets that I haven't shown here, and they'll bolt to the front of the lower block, as well as to each other. You'll probably see them leftover.

For the power steering pump, if you're lucky enough not to have AC, then it's simple. The non-AC bracket attaches to the first exhaust manifold stud and the first cylinder head hole.

But if you have AC, then the PS/AC brackets are like puzzle pieces, and there are several of them, one being the pump's mounting bracket (in the pictures) that's probably already attached to the PS pump.

They bolt to the lower engine block, the front of the water pump, the front of the cylinder head, the two first exhaust manifold studs, and to each other in some places. Once you start putting them on, then you'll see how they go together. There's also a long arm/bracket that attaches to, I think, the 3rd exhaust manifold stud and stabilizes the AC compressor. I think there might be another bracket on top for the compressor, but it's been about 20 years since I removed it, so I don't remember if I still have everything. If there is, then you'll probably have it leftover in your toy box.
