Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
Hi, I’m new. Might be posting in wrong section here.
I’m swapping out the old 2.8 carbed v6 for my rebuilt 350 and I’m scratching my head trying to figure out where the tach wire from the gauge is to hook up my hei pigtail. I understand it runs from the coil to the tach filter and back somewhere else, but I don’t have any recollection of where it goes after that.
Other members here have mentioned that it is a white wire, but my connecters on the tach filter don’t mate up to anything on my harness. Also I don’t think it’s a white wire on this year. I might be wrong.
Oh, and it’s an 82 berlinetta. Had the v6 originally.
Here’s what the tach filter connection looks like.
Thanks.

The tach wire on the V-6 cars (at least the early ones) is black. V-8 cars have a white wire.
If the connectors for the filter are not compatible, just cut them off and use spade connectors...
Hi, thanks.
Sadly, the only black wire from the engine harness goes to the alternator.
I was thinking the same thing, just connect them with new connectors. The problem is that when the v6 was in before, the tachometer was working, meaning It had to hook up somehow.
Is there way to test the possible tach wires to determine which one it is? I understand pulling the gauges back isn’t the logical route to go.
On another note; I'm curious about how you're routing your fuel line...
Currently in the works. I still have the original line on. I have an aluminum line I stole from work that I’ll use to route to the other side. I don’t want to route it on the engine crossmember, and I don’t want to put it next to the radiator because the gasoline might get too hot before it reaches the carb. What do you think?

The alternator should have a red wire and a brown wire on the same connector. The only black wire would be a 10ga. wire going from the output to the positive side of the battery...

I think you should see if you can find the OEM style fuel line that goes under the bell housing tunnel and runs on top the passenger side frame rail.
What I am not sure of is how difficult it would be to install with the transmission in the car...

Too hard to tell if it’s black or brown, but yeah it is there on the alternator. Point aside, no other black wires, but I’m tempted to just wire up that white wire to the hei and see what happens. It’s the only logical wire left, but I’m still baffled why it doesn’t hook up to the tach filter plugin. Worse case scenario is that it doesn’t work.
Since it’s a fresh engine rebuild, I have to do the break in process of running at 2000-2500 rpms for 20 minutes, so it must get sorted out.
Do you have a useful thread link from this website that explains how to change out the resistor on my tachometer to read properly for a v8?

Definately the optimal route, I feel guilty for planning to route it in front of the engine…..Feels silly, but I may run it like that for now.

I was actually thinking of cutting the line near the gas tank, routing the v6 line to the other side of the trunk, and running it forward. I spent half of the day today thinking it out. I don’t think it’s a bad idea. I want the engine bay to be as practical and aesthetically pleasing as possible.
