Is it possible to add 4.9 litres to the 3.1?

well, i am not really going to do it, but i was wondering if it was possible, probably not i guess, cause the 10 cylinder is very long. right? well anyways people, just askin
Well have you ever had to mess with things like changing the plugs on a V8 3rd gen? Although not as bad as 4th gen, the engine bays are tight. You might be wondering why I bring this up, well I own a 70' Dodge Challenger too, and it one of the largest engine bays of any Mopar ( it could easily swallow my Camaro whole
) and the 488 is a PITA to swap into them, so imagine the swap into a Camaro.

I tell ya stick an LT1 and Non AC heater box in the 3rd gen and plug changes are a breeze, I had to pull mine the other day, couldnt get to number 3 and 5 cause i didnt feel like hacking up a socket at the moment, but the other 6 took me about 10-15 min, man that was a LOT better than 6 hours for plugs/wires in my 94.
Now I dont want to get off on a rant here, but...
The Challenger forementioned was a custom one off, because there is no way even a Challenger could swallow a Viper engine (let alone a Camaro) The fire wall had to be put back more than a couple of inches on that huge Mopar bay. I dont think that it would fit in a third gen.
You would have to: fab motor mounting spots, move the fire wall back at least 6 inches, make a custom crossmember, fabricate headers, plumb the T-56 so the shifter will line up with the stocker, run a low profile fan, serpentine drive system, make up a compatible wiring harness with the Viper computer, and about a million different other things.
Oh yeah, you would fail emmissions because the Viper does not have EGR! Talk about reinventing the wheel. The 550 hp isnt asking much of a 454 or even a well built SBC.
Plus the V-10 is a horrible engine. If you think that a Viper has that Lambourghini whine, as all those cylinder hit there magical chord seperately, you're wrong! The Viper fire 2 cylinders at a time, so it is like having 2 inline 5s together. The only reason it wins against SBC Corvettes in competion racing is pure dimensions. Longer engines, even with the same displacement, will slap short engines, purely because there is more room for posts!!!
There you gone and done it, you got me on a rant!!!

Screw the Viper engine. Get a ZR1 Lt5, put twin turbos on it, with nitrous, then we're talking.

I've been looking into this conversion for a while now. A used Viper motor (gen 2, of course) with a low milage will set you back about $10,000 with all of the bits on it. Of course I'd want the T56 tranny and a heap of other bits which starts to make it a little unpractical...but I'm not dismissing it yet
Also, viper upgrades cost a lot more than bits for GM engines. If I was doing the swap I'd just have to have a good 800bhp+ from the motor and the cost just becomes rediculous.
The point is though, that it will fit, and it can be done if you have the funds.

It'll fly alright. There's a guy in Texas, Norm Koerner, who has #3 of 4 of Lingenfelters TT ZR1. That beast was putting out 820 rwhp...befere he took it back for some modifications
Good thing about the LT5 is that is makes power all through it's rev range...all the way upto 7000rpm. And it sounds pretty good too, especially with the ppppssssssshhhhhhhhtt

they are the true godly motors. build one of them puppies up and bam ud be suing urself for whiplash
they are the true godly motors. build one of them puppies up and bam ud be suing urself for whiplash I honestly think its impossible because of the whole ECU/Computer issue. Its not as bad with the really big older engines but I think (and I might be wrong) the Viper engines are computer controlled and you're going to run into lots of problems. The other questions is, besides bragging rights, why would you want a big heavy v10? Its gonna make the front very heavy (junk for roadracing). You can get more power out of a turbocharged v8 and the car will go faster cuz the v8 is lighter. For the price of that Viper swap you could prolly swap in a LS6 and turbocharge it. But you prolly couldnt replicate the ground shaking roar of that v10.
the vipre engines are aluminum, with that said they are LIGHT... i just watched a show the other night about the history of the viper. they are just plain bad @$$. yeah sure its possible, anything is with the right kind of money. but to spend the money on a GM car i would have to go with a 454 supercharged with about every racing part there is, on it.

wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy a Viper???? i dont know i think it would be killer to see but dam you might as well take the looks of a Viper with the price tag. and i have seen a movie clip of a civic beating **** out of a viper. just go with a SC V-8 or put twins on it
