SBC 400 steam holes

I already know the answer to the question but I still must ask it.

Can I tell if the steam holes have been drilled without pulling the heads off my motor? I have done everything to keep it cool but
the temp continues to rise the longer I drive it. The only thing that I haven't done is check these holes.

Thanks in advance

Jeff

Also, the lack of holes won't cause the temp to continue to rise.

Is your lower air dam intact?

SBC 400 steam holes

This is very wierd because it never really over heats but I can feel the loss of power and the temp goes up to about 220-230. I don't do any stop and go driving with it because it gets too hot
but never has boiled over. I have checked timing, new high flow water pump, new radiator, all new hoses, flushed the whole system several times, the air dam is intact, ireplaced the fans with electric ones, I even tried below 40 and water wetter. I will pull the heads this week.

The engine runs great up to 200 degrees then it starts to loose power. Even in the cold winter months it still doesn't stay under 220-230.

Any suggestions.

what kind of thermistat you got in there?
low temp? Wtht he stock one it will run in that neborhood. Also, have you considered a beefier radiator? Do you still have the ac in it? that condenser will block flow through the radiator

What induction system is on it? What heads? What pistons?

I noticed a mild power loss when my engine passed 200*. Thats why I swaped in a 160 stat and a switch to my fan so that I no longer have that problem.
Good luck

SBC 400 steam holes

The engine has carb. induction, 461 heads they are 64 cc,2.02 in
1.60ex valves, I do not know what pistons are in it, I would guess they are stock. the thermostat is a 160 deg. Yes I did remove the condenser from the a/c. . I did not exchange the radiator perminantly yet. What I did do is to rig another radiator
into the car for a few days but know change. I bought this engine from someone and he told me that it ran hotter than normal, but since he didnot put the heads on it he doesnot know if the steam holes were drilled.

Never thought I would have so many problems with the cooling system.

Try a better water pump

www.stewartcomponents.com

I have had one of these for some time on the 400 in my 83 car with no problems. Of course I didn't really have any problems with the stock one either; but this one does seem to make it run a little cooler.

I have 186 heads on mine, with 12cc dish pistons (about 10.4:1 compression); the stock single electric fan; stock radiator for a later model F car (aluminum & plastic); A/C still in place and operating normally; etc. No overheating problems, ever.

All that the steam holes do, is to allow any steam pockets that might build up right under the deck at the top of the sleeves between the siamesed cylinders, to escape. They have nothing to do with "overheating" as such.

Running too lean will cause high operating temp, as will retarded timing.
