How loud will no cats,no muffler be?

My muffler fell off. It wasnt welded on,just a clamp. Rustay!

Anyhow I never really bothered to put another one back on,and I've just got my stock exhaust. I thought it sounded aiight. Now however,my cat is gone bad. Its making an anooying (loud) hissing sound whenever I hit it.

Anyhow,I'm thinking about just taking it off and running a straight pipe for now. Is it going to be REALLY fricking loud with just a pipe all the way back? Also,if I just run a turbo muffler with no cat, will it be more throaty?

Thanks.

well with no muffler or cat it will be loud but sound like utter s h i t................ i reccommend a high-flow cat with two one chamber flowmasters..... that will give you the sound you want...... run 2 pipes from the cat and then run a 1-chamber on each..... that will b ur best bet b/c that is loud as **** and legal at the same time

Good luck avoiding the sound police. I think open headers sound awesome, but then again if you're running 15s or something, you're not much better than a ***** I guess you could say.

I'd say get a hi flo cat and hooker cat-back. sound clip in the sign.

I agree, you'd need to have a cat at least on there to dampen it a bit. When I was taking off my old system, I took it off in pieces and started the car to see how it sounded. Having cats (not gutted) sounded the loudest without sounding too "*******". Straight off the shorties sounded like a machine gun.

Now I have slp headers, hi-flow cats and a Flowmaster catback, but it just sounds awesome with the cutout open. (Cutout after the cats, of course.)

I took my cat off Friday. Friday night I had 3 cops chasing me because it is extremely loud. I like it at 3500 rpm though. I'm going to be welding my exaust cut-out on Monday.

When I run with the cut-out open it is extremely loud but sounds really sweet. For cruising its the best but if you are going on a date then I think a muffler is needed. My 305 sounds like a built up BB with the cut-out open and makes all the ricers and stangs **** themselves

From what I've seen, on this motor, running a total straight pipe (!Cat !Muffler) will be within acceptable volume levels if you run pipe all the way back past the axel. It'll sound like crap, but it probably won't get you pulled over for being too loud.

I think the only cars that should be run open pipe are the ones at the track and old muscle cars that have a nice lobe to them. As far as a third gen, even though back pressure is bad, you need some to be a daily driver. And I think just running the pipes all the way out the back is not enough. And I don't think your motor with single pipe would not sound good that way.

I removed the cat on my 83 T/A last week, and ran a straight 2 1/4" pipe in between...just took a hacksaw and cut the 'bell' off where the converter bolts to the tailpipe assy, had the pipe bent 10 degrees and the ends flared to 2 1/4 I.D....(the pipe is 25" long)...a noticeable difference in power, and a throatier sounding exhaust note...sounds great !!!....and it cost me 12 bucks including clamps....plus the converter weighed 37 pounds !!!

If you just hollow out the cat, instead of removing it, the empty casing will still act as a resonator and you won't get louder by much. But you will feel the performance gain.

With my cut-out open my car does NOT sound like crap at all. It sounds like a muscle car. I get people telling me my car sounds awesome all the time. The thing sounds bad. Got a nice deep thumping at cruising and a slight gurgle to it when slowly accelerating. The car is just a mean sounding car.

Heck i got 3 inch exhaust no muffler and complete dual-cats. My stuff sounds really good. I think it sounds better without a muffler. If you go with a straight pipe and no muffler might sound really really loud and annoying. I think the cats help with the sound a bit especially if you don't have a muffler. I think someone said that the 3 inch exhaust makes the sound a little bit more deep. I noticed a nice exhaust tone cruisin around 2000-2500 rpm. Could try a magnaflow muffler or so to quiet it a bit. I think that will take some db's out and will probably give you a deep tone.
