Yeeeeeah! Headers rule!
Yeeeeeah! Headers rule!
Ok, those who have been following my threads know that I just had my headers/Y/straight pipe installed to compliment my flowmaster. Now I've got numbers to back it up! I could tell a major SOTP difference, well, turns out they were worth .6 and 5 MPH!
Last season I ran a best of 16.8@80.98MPH, tonight I hit a 16.24@84.5 and a 16.27@85.3! The only changes to the car besides the exhaust work are a new cap/rotor/plugs/wires which were intsalled in november, and new tires which I still spun a bit but not bad. I was a little nervous, lots of freinds watching, so my R/Ts weren't so good either.
But the reason I posted this was to show just how big of a gain I got!

Nice. Might not be hella fast, but I bet with that open element and full exhaust she has a great tone and is a blast to drive huh?
Can't wait to give my car a kick in the pants, this summer I plan on MSD coil, cap, rotor, wires, Denso Iridium plugs, full Hooker exhaust, and maybe get into PROM burning if I can afford it

Yep, 3.42's would be good, and yes ideally you want to cross the line at your redline in 4th gear, but that's ideally. In your case I'm sure you'd be close enough.
Well, the reason I want to cross at redline in 3rd is because I'd have to back off the throttle to get into 4th gear. And since I drive it all the time, the 3.42 will be a bit milder than a 3.73.

But you have something I dont have and its called overdrive. 3.73's would rule!! Hey if I am doing 4.10's w/o OD, you can do 3.73's...

You could install a shift kit in the tranny and fix some of that problem. With 4th gear I was thinking about a 5 speed, but you would probably want to stay in 3rd because it is 1:1. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I don't have much experience with the autos...

kfoley-Gas milage?? I don't know, but you can actually watch the gauage move when you are on it!! So I would say 4-6 mpg.

EEK. I dont think he drives that car daily though. I get between 20 to 24 MPG, depending on how much I lay into it. Which, BTW, is alot lately. Summer is rolling around, you take the T's off and race around town. Gotta love it.

I'm already running 16.2s (see sig) so I hope to hit about 15.8 or so once I do the gears. After that, adding a Edelbrock TBI intake, worked TBI unit, and chip. Hopefully that'll let me hit 15.5 or so.
If I can run 15.5, that'll be 1.3 seconds off what it used to run, a big improvement I'd say.

Shaving 1.3 seconds off of anyones time is great, even a Del Sol with a bi-plane wing.
Dosent seem like 1.3 secs. makes a difference, but its usually between at least $500 to $1,500 or more for those precious ticks. When you spend that much money, you better make up some ground.
Some day I'll just spray, thats where the $500 for 1.3 secs. comes in at.

3.73 arent bad with the 700r4. I haven't been to the track but i get about 18 mpg and run about 2500rpm at 70 mph. i wouldn't have anything but 3.73 just my .02.

3.73's are great if you have o/d. It still if going to be low rpms on the highway. Plus, off the line, going from 2.73s to 3.73s if going to be a night and day difference.
ah, but what I am thinking is that it will take more than just a posi unit to hook up - gonna take some rear suspension stuff. Which for ppl with limited $$$ (like me!) cant be good...But I am sure its still worth it!

I'm not having any problem hooking.... yet. Brand new BFG Radial T/As (235/55/15 I Think, don't remember and don't feel like getting up to go look) and stock suspension are doing fine right now. I spun a little off the line at the track, but not for more than 1/2 a second. Just a nice skrrrrrrrk off the line. Word has it my posi unit has newer clutches in it too, rebuilt by previous owner. I dunno for sure, but I do know for 132,000 miles the posi works damn good. I would like to do some susp. upgrades though, more for cornering than anything.

I hate how my flowturd sounds. i NEED bigger exhaust though so that may be my problem...
Yeah mike, can't totally blame the setup. Cause we have the exact same thing, and mine sounds great. Your motor just needs to push more air than a 2.5 system can handle! I say its time for some 1 3/4 headers and bigger.... everything!

Dave, actually, I may have found an exhaust setup for my car. I bought a couple chevy magizines on the way to ohio and saw an add for a 4 inch catback for our cars with dual outlets. i am going to check on pricing and if its reasonable I will probably get it. That would be enough for me I think!! I'll keep you informed like aways...

Well guys after swapping in a 350, dual cats and putting on edelbrock tes headers i ran a best of 14.8 at 91which i think is pretty pathetic. It is a big difference with headers though. With the 305 i ran a best of 15.9 at like 84. The things i can blame my bad times on now are the timing, traction, and my 5.0 chip.

Yeah, I'll bet those 3 things are significaltly hurting you. A 5.7 chip isn't that hard to dig up is it? I dunno never tried hunting for TPI chips before, seeing how thats not what I have.
"a 4 inch catback for our cars with dual outlets"
I think that would do nicely, especially considering your motors high RPM range. Is that just the cat back, or is there a 4" Y-pipe avail. as well? You'll have to show me this when you get back.

I checked out the website. The add is in the back of the new hot rod one. The issue with the tribute one to that guy. It is expensive though, but you get what you pay for. It was around 600.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this but i'll toss it out there anyway. 3.73's might help you now because you're not putting down much power and at those low trap speeds, steep gears like that place you're motor right at its peak power point. But then you start modding some more and hopefully you're putting down more power to the pavement. But most of the time your power band still stays the same, rpm-wise. Whats this mean? You will run out of gear before you cross the finish line.
