Do I really need a catback system????
Since putting on my edelbrock tes I've replaced the catalytic converter and installed a flowmaster 70 series muffler. The stock exhaust (88 formula 350) seemed to be be 3 inches anyway so I decided to retain it instead of installing a catback system.
I know that the piping isn't "mandrel bent", but it is 3 inch..right???
Any suggestions / explanations would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Marty

Are you sure it's 3" and not 2.75"? Either way, a mandrel bent 3" would help, dynomax sells just the I-pipe I think, though I don't know the part #.

I bet your exhaust is like mine. It was 3" at the cat, but necked down at the muffler to 2.75" and the tailpipes are 1.5. FYI, mine had a mandrel bent intermediate pipe but nothing else...replaced by the dealer years ago.
I have an 89 with 3 in. to the muf which was replaced with a flowmaster 80 and then dual 2.5 tail pipes, so its a catback already.
and yes its 3 in all the way i was just under the car this weekend working on the cat.

That's good to know. Still thinking of the Hooker catback. This flowmaster 70 is OK..but still not that inspiring.
Thanks!

if you get to the point that you need a new muffler or pipes are rusting by all means buy a whole catback, but why but it now when you can spend the money else where.
i havent hread a 70 so i dont know the sound but the 80 with my 3 in chrome tips is deep and loud when i'm on it. if its just the sound that is uninspiring then think about a different muffler which is 1/3 or less the cost of a whole system. you can even buy the hooker areo chamber and a set of tips if you want.

I'm content with what I have right now. Maybe not completely happy but content. I agree with saving money and just swapping out the muffler someday. Pipes look like they are in good condition.
Thanks

If you keep the car then you will have to replace the muffler eventually anyway so I would wait. If you can get a good deal and sell some of your parts then maybe you can go to something else. If you don't keep the car then you'll just be buying the next guy a nice catback. I've got a stock intermediate pipe about half way back then a new mandrel bent repair piece going into a flowmaster delta flow and 2.5 dual outs. Sounds fine. I had a cherry bomb muffler when I bought it that fell off. I've got $120 in my whole system, but then I am the cheapest b*astard on this board.
