Question bout side pipes...
Question bout side pipes...
Well I was at a car show last week at the Daimler Chrysler HQ and saw some badass muscle cars (cudas, super bees, challengers, chargers *drool*) and it got me thinking..
I was thinking about running side pipes on my car... I am just curious as to whether it would be okay to run each header on a separate pipe? I was thinking the easiest way to run them would be to have the pipe come out at the rear of the front wheel well and run down the side of the car. Now if I go with this setup I won't be able to run an x-pipe (would be *extremely* tight if i managed to) so I am wondering if I would have any negative performance because of this??
And for those who say I won't have any ground clearance running it like this.... I don't have any already

I know beauty is a relative think but sidepipes on a thirdgen would like *** hands down. I'm not trying to flame here. They look clean on c3 vettes and thats about it. Sure you would see gains in HP but a)it'll be very noisy and it'll far from smog legal and b)any gain you get IMO isn't worth the trouble (and tact).
Sidepipes look best on the older, more curvaceous, cars such as your Corvette Stingrays, second-gen F-bodies, and Shelby Cobras. About the only modern car I know that sidepipes would look right on is the Dodge Viper. Sidepipes on a third-gen just ain't right.

I've taken a liking to those C4 kits that integrate side pipes into the ground effects (that are painted the same color as the car). Exhuast simply exits through an oval hole at the back of the ground effects.
Hey, good idea. I like the sidepipe idea. I was actually contemplating the same thing for my car 89 firebird formula 350. My only real concern in the deal was that i wanted to put an x pipe in the setup. Personally, i was going to get them painted the same color as my car (if possible) and have it look like ground fx sorta. Nice idea though...now i just gotta wait for cash to fall from the heavens so i can get started

Id think side pipes would look good on a Base camaro with out GFXs and same with a firebird. on a GFXs car thay would look good coming out of the GFX kind of like the SVT lighting.

There is a Blue Camaro around here with a Ram-air hold and side-pipes it looks like *** and is stupid as hell. I would be cool though if you could have the exhust exit before the rear tires through the sides, kinda like the Mustang Cobra R

i am also wanting to have side pipes. i dont want the whole pipe to be running along the bottom of the gfx, but just the tip infront of the rear wheels, much like the posts before mine.
but i was thinking of trying to find a way to modify the 90-92 gfx with the air holes in them to some how wrap around the exhaust somehow.
is the back seat/exhaust law a nation wide law or is it just within certain states. my friend's dad owns a 1969 ss 396 chevelle and he has 4" side exiting exhaust and it looks really really bad a$$ on it.

I'll try to explain it as well as possible.
Now I don't know how much room there is cause I don't have GFX, but maybe you can put in side pipes "behind" the GFX and make a hole in the GFX?
If that works, you have more HP and a hole in your GFX.

rebirth, that is how i would do it.
i think the gfx hang down 1-2" lower than the bottom of the car.
also what kind of mufflers would i have to run...i was thinking glass packs right off of long tube headers running to a straight pipe, then that bend in the end of the tube... i think it would sound pretty dam* sweet.

i've got sidepipes on my car, and i'm not fond of them.
they're only a 2 inch pipe. in otherwords, they don't let the engine breathe very well at all. if i were to step up to a bigger pipe, i'd have clearance problems. i personally don't like how they look, but i'm not worried about the exhaust right now.

i just saw a 4th gen SS with sidepipes. First of all, the car was not stock by any means, it was mean as hell, and the sidepipes only made it better. Kinda seemed like they made the car, was like screw off, i have power and i know how to use it.
