Unfortunately we live in CA and it is necessary for the AIR to be in our cars to pass SMOG inspection. The AIR I believe cleans the exhaust while the car is cold. You need it though if you plan on driving your car as a daily driver or it will not pass smog.

Sorry Killjoy I am still looking for that kind of smog shop myself
If I could find one I would install all the stuff in my garage right away instead of making them smog legal.

Smog parts aren't just for the environment, they also help your car run better. If your car didn't have a cat, 02s,egr, and air injection it may make less power by running rich or lean. Leave a nasty black mark in your driveway every morning, get 8 mpg as opposed to 12 or 13. The factory puts the stuff on to comply with federal regulations but the do make it work and serve a purpose.

You do make a good point, I don't think a lot of folks think about that. But AIR system as far as I know is just a means to support the older style catalyst that requires a supply of fresh air to maintain proper temp. and keep from clogging. And I dislike the extra clutter it creates.

Well the bottom line is you need the smog equipment to drive the car on California roads. If you plan on using that car for racing only and don't plan to take it on the road then rip everything out. I am just telling you that if this car is your daily driver then without the stock smog system on it you will NOT pass smog inspection which means no registration. I know the laws suck because I have perfectly good headers which I have to spend money on to make them pass smog. So if you plan on driving on the roads then unfortunately you have to keep the equipment whether your car needs it or not.
If he is even bothering running a high flow cat, he needs to keep the air injection to maintain the cat at startup. Otherwise he will eventually load it up with crap and clog it or burn it up from being lean.
If your not worried about the cool black spot in your driveway every morning or the sulfur egg smell then ditch the air injection, If you have to run emissions though you'll get burned.

Technically if you want your car to pass emissions it has to fail then you spend your alotted waiver amount on the repairs and if it fails again you get your registration anyway because you supposedly tried to fix it. In our state the waiver amount I believe is $400.00

If your state doesn't have an inspection, fine and good, but travel to a state that does and get pulled over, if they want they CAN look under your hood, and if the emission controls aren't there they very well can fine you (at the least).

HA! i laugh at that one... theres no way a cop is going to know what belongs under each cars hood.... he'd have to know every make, model.. year... wont happen...
so i still dont get the thing about the air "warming up the cat". if thats true... why dont all cars have this on now?? LT1's sure as hell dont.. and they used the same cat we do.. so i really dont get the point of it..
anyways... i still have all this stuff on the car.. except the EGR. i havent had it pre-tested at a smog place... but im pretty sure it wont pass.. thats why i need a place that will hook me up.
and about the Scrap your car thing... they dont do that any more.. that bill was trashed after too many people got pissed about classic cars getting trashed..
and as far as i know.. the 400$ thing is now in effect.. but you only get registratoin for 2 years.. after that they want you to take it to a state inpection. just a route i really dont want to go.

No that bill that got trashed was a different thing. I know they still do the $1000 dollar one because my friend got $1000 for his Ford Fiesta that didn't pass smog (with a little help from us
) The LT1 used a more updated style catalyst system than our old *** style that's why they don't have it. But that isn't relevant because our cars DID come with AIR and the smog tech knows this. It is a federal crime to remove any smog equipment that was equipped with the car from the factory. Now with the smog station that will "pass" you let me know because I need one of those myself

I was looking under the hood of an LT1 car today, and it had air injection fittings on each exhaust manifold. It just had one per though, instead of 4 per like our cars.
I'm not trying to be a smartass, Just trying to contribute to a discussion.

The LT1 cars are set up not to run it, obviously if you have it, it is there for a reason. The feds didn't tell chevy "You guys have to run a cat and air pump". What they said was "To have your car drive on this states roads it needs to meet these specs at idle for emissions and these specs for cruise". Now what the individual state requirements and eventually all of the states agreed on, was that it is considered illegal to tamper with any emissions control device that is mentioned on an underhood sticker. If you live in Cali it will be impossible to get your car through because they will check under the hood to see if your emission control devices are present.
