My car has 305 exhaust manifolds on my 350 engine how much will this effect my time , because I went to the track last night and alls I could run is a 16.3, and do you think my 670 carb is too big for my current setup.

Yeah I think gears and the stock exhaust are hurting your times a lot.

The manifolds are really hurting you, along with the gears. The carb isn't too much, you probably could have went bigger, a lot of guys run holley 750's on a 350. I would say grab a set of headers, a catback and get some 3.73 gears and you should be mid to low 14's.

The stock TH200C is okay but in high performance applications, I would try to get a TH350 in there. Im pretty sure they have the same tailshaft length as the TH200C

if the 305 manifolds are off of a 305 tpi then there is no difference between 305tpi and 350 tpi manifolds

you have a very bad overall first gear ratio
2.52x2.73=6.88

try a 700r4, get a built one of course and 3.73's
3.08x3.73=11.49

that will get you off the line.

then do the exhaust, your manifolds might have the 1 7/8 outlets, some 1 5/8 ths headers and a 3in cat/exhaust will fix u up

maybe 13's

looking at your cam specs, its not surprising. you got low torque and no mechanical advantage off the line and some big restriction up top where your cam will come on.

personally, i'd get the 700r4 first. it has a lower first gear that will get you off the line a little better with the 2.73's

if you get the gears first you will be screaming down the highway. besides its better to match them to the tranny you want to end up with. 3.48-3.73 with a 700 is pretty responsive. If you do alot of highway go 3.48, if not 3.73

Then get the exhaust. a cheap way is to find an IROC in a junk yard and scrap it for its manifolds, ypipe, and cats. after the tranny and gears you will need to save some money. if you have a 3in system after the cats then that is what i would do.

why would I want to put exhaust maniflods on when I getting headers.And 700r4 are not good transmissions for the track. I will probably go with either 3.73 or 3.42 because I do not drive on freeways that much. I like your options but doing a full tranny swap just so that I dont have to change my gears would be a waste of money and same with putting exhaust manifolds back on. thanks for all your help though.

the 700r4 is a good tranny, its not the strength equivalent of a 400 but its more than capable of handling a 12 second car when properly built. Look at the 10 second slp firebird in hotrod last month, he uses a 700r4.

just swapping gears is going to give you less of an advantage than doing the tranny first. you will get off the line quicker, but your high speed ability is sacrificed, as well as mileage, engine wear, and overall drivability. the 700 gives you a better selection of ratios for general performance driving not just drag racing from a standstill.

You said money was a issue so i advised that you could get highflow manifolds for cheap compared to the compromised design your using now. Headers are better but much more expensive and difficult to deal with for a novice mechanic, you will need good plug wires and plug access is a bitch, i made specialized tools to access the plugs on my engine, slp 1 3/4 on afr190 heads. its not fun

I don't know that much about trannies, but I will add what I do. The Turbo 350 is a good tranny, faster than a same build 400, but will not last as long. The 700R4 is a 4 speed tranny, I would try to get one before 1986. I have been told that after that year the quality went down hill. I am sure somebody can tell you on here if the 4 speed tranny will work with your shifter. Buy a tranny out of a junkyardor if you find a beater for 50 bucks get it there and rebuild it. The rebuild here would cost about 350-500, but like I said that is here. If you do some looking around you can find headders and everything else you want cheap, headman aren't bad, but remember they are not a hooker or slp. And trust me I know what it is like being that young and wanting to go faster!! It takes time. Good Luck.
