SLP Exhaust vs. Flowmaster/Hooker
I might get the SLP exhaust on my car... that would be 3'' stainless steal pipes. But I would rather have a little more volume and lose maybe 5 horsepower. I hear that the SLP free flowing stainless steal mufflers are pretty quiet, and I was thinking about getting the 3'' stainless steal pipes, and then putting in a FLowmaster or hooker muffler to get the volume. What does everyone else think?

Yeah, I have to agree. I wouldn't get the SLP cat-back either, its expensive and not that much better. I like my Hooker system a lot, it was a great buy for $260 out of Jegs. My personal favorite for cat-backs is the Random Technology one, but it costs over $330. The Hooker one looks, sounds and performes the best for those under $300.

I also have a 99 Trans Am with SLP Firehawk exhaust. The SLP stuff is quiet, but the cops around here ignore the Trans Am for the most part and the quiet exhaust is part of the reason. I like the stealth factor, with the SLP product.

I agree with fly89gta. I've had the SLP on my 'ROC since '93 and love it. Sounds somewhere in between a Flowmaster and a Borla. Mellow at cruise and downright loud when you wind it out. I've had nothing but compliments on it.

Yea guys apples to oranges.
My SLP is louder than hell. Very deep at cruise, but as soon as you open it up it gets very loud. Never heard the Hooker system so I can't comment, but I've never liked the sound of Flows.

There are more than one SLP exhaust and they are all different. For an F-body, there are 3 different cat backs.
1. The dual/dual. Very quiet free flowing exhaust with tips like the picture below. An option on dealer delivered 98+ Camaro SS & Firehawk ans also sold aftermarket by SLP. Some factory installed dual/duals have a restrictor plate to make them even quieter.
2. The 2 on the left (2OTL). This exhaust is also offered for thirdgens, and since I heard Gregg1LE's '91 tonight with this exhaust, it's tone is very close to my LS1 2OTL, the only difference being the idle difference (small block Chevy's sound better than an LS1 IMO). This exhaust is noticeable but not obnoxious at idle and roars at wide open throttle. It has 3" pipe from the cats going into a strait through muffler exiting through 2 side by side tailpipes on the drivers side. I really like this exhaust for a daily driven car.
3. The new "LOUDER" resonator LS1 exhaust. This is simply explained by this picture (where is the muffler)
I'm not sure about the legality but I bet this isn't the quiet exhaust someone above mentioned

i have the flowmaster series 80 on my 91 z28 (305tpi) and love it. At first i put the muffler on and it was too quiet so since then i had the converter taken off and it made it 3 times louder. At idle its not too loud but when you lay into it you can hear it from blocks away. There is one down fall with the flowmaster when you let off of it(it becomes very noisy(cracks and pops).
BUT FOR THE MONEY THE FLOWMASTER IS YOUR BEST BET.

I've used both Flowmaster and SLP and without a doubt the Flowmaster is a little louder(this is with headers and a 3" cat in place comparison) to the SLP but the SLP is a deeper sound and can get quite loud and still sounds good when the loud pedal is put to the floor. The Flowmaster was good and loud but was just too loud(mustang-ish) for my taste.

You say that the LT1/LS1 sound is very different than the L98 sound. Is it really that different? Should I put a Flowmaster on my SS or will it not sound good? That is what I am wondering about. I am looking to directly swap the mufflers only, so that I can get a little bit of volume. My IROC is very loud with no muffler, so I can't go straight to an SS that you can't even hear!
No, the L98/LT1 sound is much different than the LS1. There was a big thread on LS1.com some time back about this, and the concensus was that the different firing order had a lot to do with and also the different layout of the heads. And yes, the Flowmaster sounds great IMO.

Do u guys just automatically exclude Edelbrock? I love my catback, and it sounds so nice with the cat gutted. People can hear my car from a block away. Quite on idle and it doesnt crack to much or pop. I would get edelbrock if i were u, its my permanent exhaust on 3rd gens.
