why does it smell like gas?
i figured this was the place to post my question. alright, for some reason the rear of my car smells gas. it smells more under the drivers side weel well, than the passengers side. i have a flowmaster muffler, and my cat i think is sttock. i didnt do headers yet. i replaced my 02 sensor at the begining of this year i believe, but other than that i cannot figure out why it smells so bad. i only use 93 octane. any help would be great. thanks

If your car smells like gas under the wheelwell, I wonder if you have a leak in, maybe a tank vent line, or just a thought, maybe your filler neck. I take it you only notice the smell when the car is running, as if the odor is from a rich condition. I don't understand this, because if you are running a "single in" muffler, one side should smell the same as the other.
That's where the leak theory comes in. That's all I've got. Hope it helps.

One of the best things to do is put a piece of cardboard under the car, if there is a leak you will see it there. Look to see if anything is wet by the filter, and try to start your car and look again. It may only leak when there is pressure. The last thing to think about is when you get gas, does any of it spill out? It could be when gas burps when filling some could be running down the filler neck. Just some thoughts.

Keep in mind that the 91-92's had a solid gas cap, which means there is an external vent valve. It is located near the driver's side wheel well. If that goes bad you'll start to smell gas when the car is on/pressurized. I think it only cost me 5-10 at the dealership to whern I had to replace mine. It's a small white plastic deal. Jack up the driver's rear side and crawl in ahead of the tank between the front of the tank and the driver's compartment. You can't miss it.

^this kids hilarious...
as for the question, he said he smells it under the passenger wheel well which is odd because all of our "tank accessories" so to speak are on the driver side. gas cap, fuel filter etc etc are on the driver side.
i would say stick your nose under the left side and see if you get the same smell. i'll be quite honest, i get some gas stank from my car every once in a while and i've checked and checked everything and have never found a leak so it could just be the pressure venting and you jus thappen to smell it. this being said i would still check and check to reassure yourself because a gas leak is nothing to play around with.
good luck

My 87 GTA had this very same problem. I thought that if someone ever walked by my car with a cigarette, it (and the smoker) would explode into a ball of flame. :sillylol: Anyway, all kidding aside, I looked for a wet spot (no not THAT wet spot) and found none. I also checked the filler neck when filling up with gas for leaks and nothing there either. It turned out that the rubber line for the vent had rotted away, and wasn't venting thru the little plastic thingamajig (I think the technical term is kanueter valve). I don't really know what the hell it's called, but it sits up between the tank and the passenger part of the car. I just used some new 1/4" fuel line to replace the rotten one, and viola, no more gas smell. It was a little tight to get both of my hands up in there, but it only took about 15 minutes total. Good luck.
