Differences between single and dual cats

I have the single cat system on my 85Z but wanted to go to the dual cat. I'll be getting headers and cat back soon. Is there any special mounts I need or is it to much of a hassle to convert? Are there be any other problems I would run into? Thanks

Dual cats is a good way to go. You probably are, but make sure you get High Flow Cats. Also forget about that cat back because those are set-up for exhaust systems with y-pipes. Just get two mufflers. Right now I'm running dual hi-flo cats, edlebrock TES headers, 2-1/2 dia pipes, and two dynomax mufflers. I haven't had any problems with it, some ******** tried to tell it was illegal but I've had it done by a professional, had it emissions tested, and it passed everytime and the guy told me it ran really clean everytime.

Don't SLP headers come with the y-pipe? I was trying to get a complete bolt in system. If I get the headers, y-pipe, cats, and cat back I should be able to just bolt everything right in without much modification, at least that's what I hope. I know that there is a small indention in the floor board under the passanger side for the single cat system, but where is each cat located with the dual cat system? I don't want anything hanging under the car. If anybody has pictures or a link to pictures of a dual cat car I kinda want to see where everthing is located. Thanks

I shouldn't have a problem switching legally. There are no inspections or emmisions testing here.

you WILL have ground clearance problems with a true dual exhaust. plain and simple. it is all custom work. nothing is bolt on when it comes ot making your car true dual.

K&N Filter Charger (wooohooo)
GTS Headlight and Taillight covers
5% Limo Tint all around

Man if my camaro were a rice-rocket all those mods would give me what...easily 50-60 hp!!!

I dont think he wants a true dual exhaust. He just wants to get the dual cats that came stock in some 89 and later Z's. Even if you need to fabricate new hangers and such, any competent exhaust shop can do that for you. Just go searching for the pieces at a junkyard or on ebay.

I don't want dual exhaust, just the dual cat y-pipe design that came on the later cars. I assume this is possible, has anybody else done this? Are there any things I need to look out for or avoid? Thanks again

Yah its possible. My dad will be converting to dual cats when he changes his TBI RS to TPI this month. If you're getting headers and a y-pipe too, then just get the ones for a dual-cat setup and add your new cats in. You will also need the trans-to-cat hanger, that driver's side cat bolts to. (When I say driver's side cat, I dont mean there is a cat on the driver's side. They're both on the passenger side. I mean the cat that is on the driver's side, of the two. Its closest to the transmission, and there is a hanger that attaches it to the trans. Just wanted to make that clear. )

Here's a pic of that hanger and my dual-cat setup: http://24.1.139.249/images/101400/DCP_0018.JPG

Where can I get that hanger? I have a 5 speed, would it be different from the auto? I don't really want to fab anything so if anybody know where I can pick up all of the correct hangers (besides the dealer), let me know. I was planning on doing this all myself so I'll need everything before I start. Thanks
