Headers in CA dealing w/ CARB......w/n
Headers in CA dealing w/ CARB......w/n
Ok, I just bought a set of headers for my Firebird. They are a discontinued line of Hooker Competition headers designed for the 2.8L engine. They are a set that was sitting in a warehouse and they were not able to get rid of them until now. Well anyways it turns out these headers are not CA legal b/c it doesn't have the EGR fittings or the CARB number.
I thought what the hell I can make a hole in there and it would be cool and then the EGR valve would mount right on that hole and I would be able to pass smog. Well passing smog and breaking smog laws are 2 different things. Is this an emissions legal move that I am making? When I go to get it smogged should I not even bring it up or what? I'm stuck here b/c I don't want to go through all this work and then find out that I have to switch it back, ya know? Help me guys, later

Technically, by modifying the headers to LOOK smog legal, they still aren't because that header wasn't certified by the CARB. The smog guy might not know by looking at it, but if he's an ANUS he might wanna see proof that the header has an EO#, either with a decal that came with the part or with a plate attached to the header.
I went through the same crap months ago. I smogged my car and it passed the sniffer AND visual for all emissions equipment. But he couldn't pass me because he wanted proof that my SLP headers were CA legal and I didn't have the decal with the EO# on it.
If you do go through with it, just be aware the smog tech may question you about it so be prepared.
