Size Headers 4 5.0L TPI???

K I got a 90 Iroc-Z 5.0 G92 5spd. I want to setup my exhaust to handle an extreme cam. I was thinking the SLP 1 3/4 SS Headers or should I just go with edelbrocks TES? My previous experiences with Edelbrocs TES weren't that bad. What headers should I get? I do have TWO cats so will i need a special y pipe or does the ypipe come with the headers? i have $216 as of this moment and before december is over i want to purchase the headers and start werking on buying the cats. I will run a 3" Edelbrock RPM Series Catback (i wont change mind bout catback). What would be the best headers to get?

You dont want the SLP 1 3/4" headers for a 305. You want the SLP 1 5/8" headers. And either set of headers plus installation will cost more than $216. The y-pipe comes with the SLP headers.

You definatly want the 1 5/8" headers. The TES and SLP make headers for the dual cats, but like mentioned, the $216 won't get you there.

With the Edelbrock dual cat setup, you'll have to order a Y-pipe (or have one made) if you are also replacing the cats. Each header goes into it's separate cat first, and thus no dual cat header will include the Y-pipe as it is useless unless you are also replacing the cats.

As for the Y-pipe, I got an exhaust shop to make one for me. The y-pipe that was available from Edelbrock only merged into a 2 3/4" extention to mate with the intermediate pipe. I have a 3" intermediate, so I had a special one made. It cost only C$50.00 to have the exhaust shop fashion it for me and weld it in.

I think you need to review the reason's you want to get an "extreme" cam and big headers. I think you are asking for a combination that will perform poorly because of mismatched parts. There is a lot nore to picking an acceptable cam than the manufacturer's advertised operating range(and keep in mind most SBC cams are given an operating range based on 350 cid). The intake, heads, exhaust, compression, bore vs stroke, and many other factors play a part in determining the engines operating range. The camshaft should be chosen based on these factors and their limitations. I would say improving your engine's breathing ability beyond the valvetrain will yield more bang for the buck than upgrading the camshaft.

The exhaust is a good place to start. But keep the big picture in mind, bigger does not always equal more power. For a 305, 1 5/8" headers are a good bet for "shorty" headers, and 1 1/2" would be good for full-length headers. Larger sizes than this might improve top-end power slightly, but the gains would be negated by the loss of low and mid power(drivability) and compromised by the breathing ability(or lack thereof) of the parts mentioned above.

hahaha, i know $216 bux wont get me the headers hahahaha. i did this on my last 88 RS w/edelbrock TES Headers, so i should go SLP 1 5/8? will do. slp sends y pipe which is good cause im instaling everything myself. I dont want to run it to the shop. BTW, i will be replacing all teh cats, and the camshaft is WAY outta the picture, im just trying to MATCH parts now. I want to get a wild cam but not in the near future, with this paycheck i should hit about $300.

I would get either the Edelbrock TES headers or if you have lots of money to spend, the SLP 1 5/8", the 1 3/4" are ment for tricked out 350s and larger motors.

------------------

L98 TPI 350 (5.7L)
TH 700R-4 Transmission with 2.77:1 Rear End

Current Mods: Edelbrock TES 1 5/8" Headers, Hooker 3" Aerochamber Cat-Back System, Performance Resource Chip with 160* Thermostat, Accel Ignition Components, K&N Filters, All Free Mods, Falken ZIEX Z-Rated Tires.

Best ET : 14.32 @ 97.7mph
(corrected for elevation)

Soon to come: LT4 HOT Cam, Air Flow Research 190cc Heads, 2800 RPM Stall Converter and SLP 3.70 Rear End Gears.

Not to sound rude, but yes , SLP 1 3/4 headers will work on a 305 and work damn well migt I add. Secondly if your going to do more mods later, do you want to spend another $300-450 on new headers? So get the bigger headers now and save your money. I have these headers on my 305 and it works great. You might not see a whole lot of gain yet, but when you do the other mods you will. Sure I have done alot of mods, but before I did I used them and they do work, just like the Chief Engineer at SLP said they would. Besides whats more fair, a GM 305 vs a Ford 302 or a 350 vs a 302? Thats how I look at it. Although each to his own.
