From what other people have done they just told me that they take the CAT off and take out all the restriction crap from the inside out. If I were you I would get a high flow CAT b/c your car still has to be smogged so why run the chances of it not passing by gutting a CAT ya know. I bought my high flow CAT from Summit for $59.99

It means back to top and on the cat issue. When I took my cat completly off my car and put a straight 3" stainless steel pipe in there instead I lost a little bit of torque down low. Has to do something with backpressure. Just some info for ya on that. So its up to u.

I've either gutted or removed the cat on every vehicle i own....i'm in Connecticut and the emmisions test us every 2 years.....I've never had one fail just for a missing cat.
If the engine is running clean the cat does nothing....the way it works is to trap exaust gas heat and create a temperatue inside the cat high enough to "re-burn" all of the gas that isn't burned in the cumbustion chamber. Thus the reason your owners manual says not to park on dry grass or leaves....your cat is probably and average temp of 300 degerees or more..
just one man's opinion

There actually was an article if removing the cat was benefitial towards hp and torque. They also happened to do it on (I believe) an 89 Z28, the Z28 had a blower and was a 305 TPI. It proved to net about 5 more hp and lose about 7lbs/ft of torque with the cat gutted. So it's up to you if you want to do it, I did it on my 88 RS and saw no big gains, a hi-flow cat will benefit you just as well.
