3 inch tips = lost torque, quieter sound
I just got 3 inch tips from Midas and I lost about 15 or 20 ft/lbs. and my car is way quieter now. It looks good though. Just wanted to let people know in case they want the same thing.
Its impossible to lose torque from tips. It just doesn't work that way. They are the very last part of the exhaust system, and are usually screwed or welded on to a set of smaller exhaust pipes which exit from the muffler. They'd be the bottleneck, and you'd have to change them to lose torque (but I still don't see that happening either). But as to your quieter sound, its most likely due to the fact that the sound doesnt have the chance to resonate between the ground and the underside of the car. That's why cars with turndown tips sound so much louder on the inside. Have someone else drive your car, I'm sure you'll find that its now louder from the outside.

It may just be my imagination about the lost torque but it seems to have lost some. I did have turndowns on my car and it was louder in the car for sure with those, I haven't heard it from the outside yet. The problem with the turndowns is that they were scraping everything they had to go across and they were really hurting the looks of my car. The tips look good though, good enough until I get my Hooker or custom exhaust. Somebody asked what muffler I was running? It's a Flowmaster 80 series.
How does that 80 Series Sound? I just got mine a few days ago, and was about to get it intsalled.

84 transam, why do you say your car is 150 hp? I'm pretty sure the 305 HO has 190 hp at 5200 rpms,I'm not sure about 240 hp torquer though, you must be talking about a different engine, in any case I would replace the tming chain with a double roller steel set,the stock one has a cheap aluminum gear that isn't very strong...trust me,I just found out for myself.if it wasn't for the inferior materials, I would still be driving right now!!
