Is taking off mufflers a good idea.

I was thinking about taking off my Mufflers. For the Reasons of sound and performance. I want to put flowmasters on there eventually. But I cant afford them right now. So I was thinking about just taking the mufflers off now and putting on flowmasters when I had the money. My brother says it will hurt performace but I think it would help. My cat is gutted out so I would in effect have straight pipes. Theres just stock mufflers on there now.

Its an 82 Trans Am with a 305. Thanks in advance for opinions or ideas. .

Your car will sound like a crappy old pick-up truck driving down the road. Don't do it you'll regret it and you wont feel any noticable increases.

PS. I'd personally point and laugh at someone driving around with no exhaust on a stock 305 thirdgen. I just might also yell out "HEY JOE DIRT!"

i know it is tempting (been there done that) but save your dough and get some headers and all 3" exhaust system w/o a catalytic convertor. it will be better...

Maybe Ill diconeect it behind the cat and see what it sounds like. Cutting off the mufflers is an irreplaceable step. Id rather test out the waters first.
