I know this question has been beaten to death but i am confused by the giant Peeing match. I have a 87 Iroc-Z. 305 5 spd. I have taken the intake off and ported the runners and the plenumn. I have gutted the cat and unhooked the air pump and ac. I am about to turn the fuel pressure up by making my fuel pressure regulator adjustable. I want something loud on my car but not crappy sounding. I dont want it to only be loud when i slam it to the floor becuase i dont like doggin my car just to impress people. I plan on doing the cat back first then shortly after putting headers on. What are your reccomendations on headers or cat backs that are AFFORDABLE for an 18yr old teenager. No stainless! Thinking about a computer chip too. Worth the money?

well I am 19 now. I had a muffler shop install a flomaster cat back for about $330. I gutted my cat for free. That was all last summer I think. Today I finished putting on my edlebrock TES ehaders. Those were about $330 and then I got a 10% discount from summit.
So figure that is $660 and it is very loud. Especailly when I step on it. Today I even saw a girl outside say outloud that my car was too loud.

89 camaro 305 tbi, flomaster 3 chamber cat back, gutted cat, Edlebrock TES Headers, Edlebrock open element, and a 160 degree T-stat. 2 kicker comp 12"'s, polk for the rest. Phoenix gold xs2300 to subs, kicker impulse 404XI to 4 speakers, pioneer DEH- P7000R head unit, and finally a 12 disc changer. Full leather interior from [URL=http://www.MrMikes.com[/URL](its nice)

Thats alot of money! I got stainless (SLP) all the way from headers to tailpipe and did it myself. Although the parts went way up the last 2 years thanks to minumum wage going up you wont be able to do the same for the same thanks to yourself (teenagers)...
Just bustin' chops although i'm serious in a way... I got a SLP 'special' deal summit was running like 2 1/2 years back where you buy the headers and get runners for $500 and just bought the catback outright. So they wanted the same for the runners back then, but the cost of their exhaust has shot throught the roof (1 3/4") since....
If you live in a humid/snow/rain/salt enviroment just get SLP... (Since you didn't post where you're from)
If you live in arizona get a steel system, lived there and done that... and wish I still did in a way.
Flowmaster or dynomax only last about 5 years with 10,000 miles a year including snow/salt driving. They shine beutiful, but the welded seams rot right out of them. It isn't cost effective for me to buy a system like that if I expect my car to last longer than 5 years.
Lots of variables...

well i am in the same predicament. 18 and looking for options. but i have decided that there is one thing to my car.
"if its gonna be done, it has to be done right!" so i will save up more money and get the best or d*mn close.
i am going with SLP 1-3/4" headers SST because of IOWA. but i also dont drive my car in the winter so.
and i am not having cats either. and the aftercat! will be 3" with a magnaflow for now! later i will be buying a borla or something. i want to flow perfect and borla is awesome.
and most exhausts are loud when you get on it, and mellow when you are idling, or cruising! but the flowmaster American Thunder is loud all the time i hear!
