80 series vs other flowmasters

i have an 80 series flowmaster muffler. it sounds pretty good. i was wondering how it is compared to the 40 series. my 80 series with no cat and large 4"X about 20" tips is as loud as a 97 lt1 with a 40 series, dual cats, and no lage tips. my 80 series may be a bit louder.

80 series is supposed to be the crossflow version of the 40 series.

According to flowmasters site, the 80 series is louder then the 40.

ya, your right, the 80 is the "camaro" version of the flowmaster 40 and supposedly its a little louder than the 40 also

i believe the charts reflect tone, and not sound level. i frequently hear people complaining about the 80 series being too quiet....so i wouldnt think it would be the loudest one they make.

i think it goes hand in hand that the "higher" the tone on the chart, the louder the exhaust will be

One of my buddies had a 40 series Flowmaster on his 1992 Z28 5.7 L98.....I swear..it wasn't just a little louder then and 80 series..I'd say more like 3 times louder. It sounded freakin awesome though....loud through every gear.....it would drown out the stereo system in it. I've been thinkin about getting rid of my 80 series so I could get a 40 series....

Would you really want 1 exhaust pipe though?? I don't understand how they can sound different when they're suppossed to be the same except 1 has another outlet.

Well, if you think about it, if the 80 has one more outlet something has to be different. It may be their best attempt to get the same sound/flow out of it, but some kind of characteristics have to change when you add an exit.

One of the Guys down here in FL had a 91 RS and did the same thing (one 40series flowmaster) and man it sounded way better and louder than my 80s series.

Also the guy welded a fake exit pipe to the muffler to make it look like it had Dule exhaust tips

The guys at the muffler shop made it with dual pipes out the back....that's the thing.....mostly everybody talks about them only having one pipe out the back...which is how it's supposed to be....but...the guys at the muffler shop (me and my buddy know'em really well) some how welded and spliced 2 tailpipes coming out the back from the muffler. The 40's sound way different.....like 3 times louder....now on idle.....the 80 series sounds louder.....but when you get going down the street....you better watch out.....cause it's loud. I'll see if I can talk to the guys at the muffler shop to see how they made 2 tailpipes functional on the 40 series....it was like a dream come true....having 2 tailpipes that were both functional on a 40 series flowmaster....

Id love to see some pics of that hope you can get the guy to tell you how he did it...

Im thinking about doing that to my 98Z28 using my stock pips and just welding in a 40 series i wouldnt mind having one fake pipe cous the sound will more than make up for it .

i think you can get 40 series with dual outlets. its the delta flow 40 and i'm not sure how it is setup but i know you can get them in 3"in 2.5 outs and 2.5in and 2"out. i think they might be in on one side and 2 outlets on the other side. what about big block mufflers? do they make them with the dual outlets like the 80 and how do they sound?

I wonder if you could just put a 40 series turned sideways (crossflow) and just have a little turndown so you don't see it.

That would probably be about the easiest way and work just as good as anything else, but people like to see those dual tips. I have duals that stop right before the rear axle so the tips wont be an issue on mine, but a lot of people like to see them.

I like my buddy's 40 series flowmasters than my 80 cause the 40 has a deeper sound while the 80 sounds like someone driving around with rags in the pipes.

my exhaust guy told me that the 80 series had alot of turbulence in it and alot of backpressure resulted from it. He recommended 40 series just cuz of the flow characteristics

I'm running a delta flow 40 series, mounted sideways with a turndown, 3" in, 3" out, with not cat and headers... it's got a beautiful rumble at idle, and when you open it up, it screams, no, I should rephrase that, it bellows! I love it! So far, (just got it all together)everyone that has heard it has fallen in love with it. I've only ever heard one 80 series on a third gen and it was on a nearly stock 305, so they're not really comparable, but sound levels aside, I like the tone of mine much better.
