breakin period?

I bought a Magnaflow muffler a while back and is still kinda quiet, the guy said it will be much louder after its broke in but how long is that? I have put about 500 miles on it so far.

I know some mufflers get louder after a while, but I am not sure how long it takes, and I think only certain mufflers do it.

It might have gotten a good amount louder but since you hear it everyday you dont notice it as much. My buddy put a new flowmaster muffler on his truck. it sounded pretty good. Then I heard it a month later and it was WAY BETTER and he said he thought it sounded the same as the day he got it.

my edelbrock took alittle while, as soon as I cut the cat off things got loud (sound was great, even better before i headers) 500 miles? of what? I would think that city driving would burn it out quicker since your car gets hotter than high way driving

I don't think those "break in". I think what the guy (who was probably older?) was refering to was back in the day when peple ran glass packs they were filled with fiberglass that would burnout after a while. That would make the muffler louder. Maybe that's what he was talking about. Most mufflers are filled with material that won't burn out. As for Flowmasters getting louder-----I've never heard of that??? Considering that there is no physical change in a Flowmaster at any mileage----Unless you put a hole in it

Just cause you havent heard of that doesnt mean thats whats what. Everyone else on here seems to agree on the fact that mufflers do get louder over time. I too have heard the glasspack theory but it is much different as you stated.

The reason people post topics is to get other peoples opinions. Since I restore and perform performanc mods as part of my business I was offering my opinion. As far *** the glass pack thing goes why do you think the muufler componies point out that there mufflers won't blow out. I think your a little over defesive in your opinion but it's just that your opinion. So help the guy out but don't get all high and mighty and condecend on other peoples posts :nono:

My Flowmaster, along with all my friends who have them installed, definitely took a little while until they reached their peak loudness.

Dont think that I am defensive, you dont know me. If you did, you would know that I was not being defensive. I was just pointing out the fact that several people had the same fealing about something than you did. Easy tiger.

I would think that what you hear is what you get and if it get's better more power to yea. Magnaflows not a bad deal at all as far as it helps take some of the cork out of it.
Flowmasters uses sound reflection wave dampening to help reduce noise in most applications. They might get a little noisy'r but they are pretty much an open deal. My flowmaster was noisy when I backed down off the rack and seems the same now.

After driving my 00 Silverado, with the stock exhaust for a week or so, then driving my Camaro with headers, no cat & 3" Dynomax setup, it seems loud, but I seriously doubt it is, only my perception of it is. I agree the the packing theory. If it's got fiberglass or similar packing, the sound will change over time. If it's baffled, all metal, it's not likely to change.
