been there, done that..back to a single. there are plenty of cars running around that make good power with a single pipe.
i utilized some of my old dual set-up to make my y-pipe for the exh i have now. which is similar to that of a new f-body , my pipes dont "y" together until about 10-12" past my tranny. i have a 7 qt. pan and my hooker competions didnt come with an available y-pipe also my tranny pan has cooling tubes running through it so hot pipe isnt what iwant in front of it although true duals do sound sweet , if i step up to long tube headers i'm probably going to do the true dual route my self.

I absolutely love my true dual exhaust and I think you would to. For serious power daul exhaust is the way to go(in my opinion).

go to a reputable exhaust shop and tell them to run two pipes side by side in the stock location. this is how i've had my previous ones done and will soon have my new ones done. if you really want that awesome sound, get headers and glasspacks at the same time. and no, it isn't too loud (like a *****).

We have debated this to the end 100 times.

I won't elaborate on what is better, just what experience I have had lately.

This is what the car came with:

Stock single 3" cat, stock Y-pipe, and cheap 2 3/4 intermediate (crush bent ) to a cheap parts store replacement muffler.

I recently put a Flowmaster muffler (crossflow with dual outlets) on it and it made a difference, but I wasn't happy

So I then switched to a 3" single outlet Flowmaster with a nice 4" tip. It was quieter (what I wanted), but made no real performance difference.

So now I go out and get a custom dual cat Y-pipe witht he cats bypassed, and a 3" MAC intermediate (mandrel bent) using the same muffler and tailpipe.

I love the sound!! The SOTP dyno says it helped out bigtime in the mid and upper RPMs.

As far as the Stainless 4" tip, it has a resonator built in, and makes it sound real mellow at idle and deep and mean at cruise rpm. It looks similiar to a Camaro SS with the single outlet on the drivers side.

I'll post pics sometime when I get a chance.

See ya.

I toook my car to the speed shop here where I live and the exhaust man said it wasnt worth putting the true duals on, and said he would go with a 3" single and get a "1 in, 2 out" type muffler and make it look like duals that way. he also said there really isnt enough room on the 89 to run a true dual.

when i had my true duals my car sounded just like a mustang, probably cause my tips went all the way out to the back i had to run the tail pipes under the rear end unlike. putting the tail pipes on gave a ton of low end power but really choked my mid and upper so then i hacked them off and went back to a dumped exh with turndowns which gave back my mid &upper , that sounded sweet too. but be weary of speed bumps for they will press the pipe up against the trans X-member and make the most annoying resonance and rattling noise you could ever imagine ! i drove around for 2 yrs like that and that was only 2.25" inch exh.
sad thing is , is that with set up i have now(dual pipes that y in behind the tranny) i still have that problem but hey its a 2.75" y pipe what do ya want !
just incase you wondering before i built the 355 i was a 305 loyalist my GTA had an slp cam, ported stock heads, plenum, & base headers true duals, stall, gear, and ads chip. all this made a 15 second car into mid/ high 13 second car.

run true duals. you won't be sorry. in fact, i'm about to replace my 3-in after-cat system w/ true duals. if you don't want the duals, you may want to look into a 4" pipe for that 400. as a side note, my brother had duals on his '82 z28 w/ a 400, and that was some car. what i'd (and he'd) give to have it back. only problem is he was replacing motor mounts about every three weeks!

Usually when muffler shops tell you not to go with a true dual setup is cuz they are to freakin lazy to even try. What they do is suggest the 3in single pipe and try to tell you that it is better than a true dual.

Hey,
Just to let you guys know
I had bought a truck magazine becuase it had an article on this..... the same truck with dual exhaust had some more low end torque and power, but the big single pipe exhaust had a lot more High end horsepower. Something to think about. You want your exhaust to have a scaveging effect that pulls the exhaust out.
