i dont think you will be able to get the V8 sound from the six (at least not at all rpms)

Yes you can!
I worked on a 1996 Tacoma V6 3.4L that had a cat back
Flowmaster exhaust system. When I started it up and
drove it in my shop, I thought that someone put a V8
under the hood! I was shocked to hear that muffler
make so much noise on acceleration and at idle!
I also worked on a 1999 Tacoma 4 cylinder with a TRD
exhaust system. It's a performance exhaust system
from Toyota. But it also had a header, and a K and N
cold air flow system. But after all that, it sounds like
a V8 all the time! It doesn't even sound like a *****!!!

i have heard many many fourth gens with different exhaust systems, none sounded as good as a V8

Yes, I agree on the rpm part,
I also worked on a 4th gen Firebird, with the LS-1 motor
and 6 speed trans. This one has the Borla exhaust
system with NO plates in it, meaning that the muffler
system was wide open!
YES, there is a differance , of course!!! You don't have to
tell me that!!! I work on cars for a living.
I'm just saying that a V6 CAN sound like a V8 with the
right exhaust system AND high performance air induction
like a K and N cold air system. Reason for that is the
higher the volume of air flow through the motor, the
louder and more volume through the exhaust!
Lots of people mistake my car for having a V8 cause of the
sound of the exhaust. So, hence, the sound and rumble
of a V8, but not as LOUD like you said at above 5000 rpms.

I had a buddy with a 4.3L S-10 with a flowmaster exhaust on it with some tips and it sound like a 305 w/ a flowmaster. So yes, it can be done, but I guess it depends more on the engine than anything else. I'ld be very suprised if someone could get a 3.1L to sound like a V8. Hell, the 4.3 wasn't that far off from being a 305 to begin with.
Senior Member
My friend has duals on his 4.3 S-10 extreme...Sounds like someone throwing up in a trashcan...Only way to make a 6 banger sound like a v-8 is to add 2 more cylinders!
Senior Member
TRUE , TRUE AND TRUE....
To everyone's opinion posted here! Yes, V6's on certain cars
or trucks can sound like a V8, and good too! Maybe just not
as deep or LOUD! Because it's not a V8 anyways.
And, yes, some V6 cars or trucks with performance exhaust
can sound like crap too!
It's all on what has been done to the motor itself, to the
air intake, what type of exhaust, etc.
But even then, the "beefed up" V6 motor may still not
have as deep a rumble or LOUDNESS as it's "big brother",
the V8!
But I have heard some pretty damn good sounding exhaust
systems on all kinds of V6 or even 4 cylinder motors that
sound like a V8 , at idle or at 4000 to 5000 rpms!
Just my 2 cents.....

People mistake my 3.1L Camaro as a 305 all day long!
And the way it performs, it's not much off from the 305
TBI either. Even though those motors aren't that powerful
either!
That's only with a custom cold air intake with single cat.
Dynomax exhaust. Very simple stuff can be done to
obtain good sounding performance!
I'm still going to change my exhuast to Flowmaster,
cause my 5 year old Dynomax is starting to rot away.
Bye the way, a 4.3L is like a 350 small block missing two cylinders! Bore and stroke are exactly the same between the
two!

To brodyscamaro,
Hey, I checked out your pics of your car. Very nice! 1991-
1992 Camaros are my favorite. Especially the Anniversary
one like yours!
So, how's it now without the 5.0L TBI and without the
2.78 or whatever gears???
Only thing I don't like, is that air cleaner needs to be
BIGGER. But that's my opinion.
What's she putting out for HP and torque?

thanks for the compliments! i love it with the 355/carb combo. 3.73s kick *** - i had em with the 305 TBI too. my air cleaner is now a 14"x2" and now i have a 1" carb spacer under the carb. and now there are less hoses/wires under the hood. and now i dont have ac or heater. and i dont have the huge ac/heater blower box. (i love it change all 8 plugs in under 10 minutes in the dark Originally posted by Camaro_nut

Your welcome,
I'm always into people's "custom" Camaro projects. I would
love to swap out my 3.1 and get the Ram Jet 350, but I
don't have the time, or the money to do this yet. It's
one of my future plans I guess.
I know I also need a complete V8 trans. and "beefed up"
rear too, just to hold the 350++ HP.
I will try to get to those vids too.
Later.

i got mine to sound like a v-8 with a custom intake and dynomax exhaust with a high flow cat, oh yeah wait a minute mine is an 8 cylinder oops guess the loud exhaust is getting to my mind

I used to have a '89 camaro v6. It had a flowmaster 2-chamber cat-back system. It did sound like a v8 on idle and when I drove around town. However, as the rpm went up (4,000+), it began sounding like those ***** mobiles. But then again, the engine hardly ever needed to 4,000rpm's.

Isn't it great how companies just completely buy that show out? How every bolt just miraculously slides out of each hole and every gasket just peels right off?
Personally, I've never heard a V6 that sounded bad@ss. I totally respect Grand Nationals, TTA's, Typhoons, Syclones, Supras, and Skylines, but I've never actually liked any of their exhaust notes. But I'd have to say that they're way better than four cylinder cars.

hey tonyc, did the grand national you heard sound like the one in this video? (scroll down to the part that says "hear the cutout in action")
http://www.buickgn.com/electricexhaustcutout.htm
even when the cutout is closed, it sounds sweet... but when its open, the damn turbo 6 sounds like a 60's musclecar

before already. Some of us just like to compare
the sounds of a V6 with aftermarket exhaust to a V8.
That's all. I personally like the sound of an LS-1 motor
with the Borla exhaust. It's the LOUDEST Firebird I've
ever heard. Can wake you up in the morning when he
starts it!
Although ,I've heard a Typhoon with Borla exhaust,
a 4.3L turbo, the closest to a V8, but not, duh!
Sounded ok, but obiviously not like a V8.
I bet a V10 sounds better than a V8. My friend has
a 1999 Dodge Viper RT/S. Sounds better than a V8.
"a V8 never has and never will sound like a V10! " LOL....
just a joke BTW....
Senior Member
i donno personally i don't like the sound of a viper motor... although i love the sound of a V12 allison/RR merlin putting out about 1500 hp

Senior Member
WOW! 1500 hp is quite a bit there. Yeah, I also like the V12 motors too. But still would just settle for a V8 anyday. But
even a V6 in some cars or trucks go pretty fast these days.
The new 2003 Toyota 4 Runner now has a totally redone
V6 that pushes 240 hp and 300 ft. lbs. The same hp as
the 4.7 V8, which you can now also get in the new 4Runner.
The torque is not the same. The V8 pulls about 345 ft. lbs.
I had never driven one of these yet. But can't wait to. They
also look very nice. Much better than before. I work on Toyotas
bye the way.
But personally , I would much rather have a 2003 Tundra
V8 with TRD exhaust.
very throaty sound!

never heard those jap. v8's i wonder what kinda performance abilities they have

I believe the v8 engines (i-force) on Toyota are American-made.
But don't do very well on gas.
Same goes for the newer v6 engines of the Honda Accord, Toyota Avalon/Camry, etc. But these do really well on gas.
Still can't beat GM engines...like the v6 in Trailblazer. They do pretty good on gas too.
Hummm, wonder if I can swap Trailblazers v6 into my camaro?!

Yeah, that's the new Trailblazer right? With the inline 6?
Don't get me wrong, I like some American cars, but pretty
much only GM . Ford just plan sucks. The only thing that
is decent is a Mustang Cobra or a Crown Victoria.

Exactly, "Certain RPMs." At idle and low revs you can make one sound pretty damn close. I've got a video clip of a 3.8 Stang with an X pipe and 2 chambers that you can't hardly tell at all until he gets about about 3-4K, when it starts sounding like a jet-ski.

Just because an exhaust system is loud doesn't mean it "sounds like a V8"I would love to hear that 4 banger you're talking about

Mine with the SLP 2 on the left sounds deeper, more mellow than stock but not like a V8. At WOT it sounds like a hurricane
not quite like a V8.
You can have the loudest LG4 on the planet and it'll still be slow. Sound doens't make HP.
As long as it doesn't sound like a fart can, I'm OK with it
