Flowmaster 80 Series Question...

I just got my car back a few days ago.. I have an 80 series Flowmaster single cat system, in which the cat is gutted out..

It sounds very nice at idle & part throttle, but when at WOT it looses the exhaust sound.. All you can basically hear is carburator, and it sounds weak..

I have an rebuilt LG4 305 4bbl, now putting out 317HP.. I do not have headers yet, which is my delema..

Will the exhaust sound better at WOT if I get headers, or should I just look into replacing the muffler? If I replace it, I think I'm going with Borla but I'd hate to replace it and have the same problem..

Thanks

how do you figure you have 317.5 HP without headers?

Well if you look at the post, my engine is rebuilt..
Everything is new and improved, Flat top pistons, cam, crank reground, bored, heads & deck machined, performer intake, performer carb, MSD ignition control & coil, wires, bearings, ports polished, plus others, and of course the new exhaust..

It was dyno tested at the shop..

So you feel it is impossible to reach that HP without headers?

seems high for a LG4. What is the RWHP? was the 317hp on a dyno stand with full headers and almost no exaust? if so then a lot of that 317hp is missing with your stock exaust.

It was tested with my stock manifolds, new intermediate pipe, gutted cat & the new muffler.. The only thing that wasn't on the car at the time of the test, were the tailpipes..

I have no emissions control either, all the ECM equipment was disconnected and removed from the engine compartment along with the A/C.. Not sure if that makes a difference though..

seems high for the TBI cars and what not but my bud has a 78 Camaro with a rebuilt 305 running about 320 HP. A lot of people are saying the flows sound hollow and tinny. Ive heard them before nad if you have a gutted cat they do sound different than if you had a good ole cat in there.

I have to see what the RWHP is. Too many people throw up HP numbers that don't come out worth much in the end. What's it do at the track? www.magnaflow.com sounds great. just like borla for less. 2 of my friends have their catback.

Yes, your exhause will sound MUCH better at WOT with headers. With your engine, I would put headers on before even thinking about changing the muffler
