Ceramic Coating....worth the cash???

Hey Fella's

I'm trying to save up some money for a set of headers for my 91 Z28 (5.7 L98).....seems like any set of headers that have ceramic coating are like $400-$500 dollars. Hedman makes a set of uncoated headers for like $180 bucks.....I try not to drive my car in any moist, damp weather.......but I want a set of headers to last..more then a couple years..... So.....should I save up for the ceramic coated set or for the uncoated set.?...( I could probably bake some high-temp paint on).... Any thoughts, oppinions, or suggestions would be greatly apprectiated. Thanks guys

What Hedman's are $180? Be sure they include the y pipe.

I myself, got the uncoated Hedman LTs and will install them to start the car. But once, I save up a little more money, they're getting coated. I've had uncoated headers, and I want coated now. Tired of burnt wires, and how they look nasty after a while.

Whether it's worth it, is up to you.

Getting a--raped by JetHot for an extra $200 isn't worth it if you have a way to do it yourself ( www.techlinecoatings.com ), otherwise, it's still not worth it but, you don't really have any other option.

My dad not wanting to pay as much for coated headers for the 90, which is a daily driver, got edelbrock nickel/chrome plated headers from summit. You'll have to paint the y-pipe though.

You are right. Chrome headers do discolor very quickly. My experience with coated headers is that they rust anyway. Its not just on my cars either. I have seen coated headers that had rust on them on hot rods at car shows as well. Have any of the rest of you guys seen this? I live in Louisiana and the humidity is very high. Maybe its different in other parts of the country....

well it depends a lot... if you coat them with some 1500 degree spray paint stuff, i can see them rusting, but i remember talking to people who have had their ceramic coated headers on there for years and they look brand new.

The exhaust system I am refering to is the one on my 69 VW. I didnt spray anything on them. They came ceramic coated from the company I got them from. They rusted within about 3 months. I called the company and they told me to send them back and they would send me a new exhaust system. This one rusted in about 3 months as well. I can try to get some pics because I still have the exhaust on my car.

John, a 6oz bottle of cermakrome will do roughly 3-6/pr of shorty headers depending on how stingy you are applying it. I use a $25 detail paint gun to apply it.
Coating your own headers is somewhat time consuming and can be quite difficult if you don't have the facilitiies to prep/paint/cure them. More people would probably use it at a hobby level if it weren't for that too. Also, alot of people are just to lazy to do the work involved with something like that. $200 thrown at JetHot=nearly instant gratification but, it's not my place to b---- about what others do. If you think you might want to give it a go, email me and I can give you a bit more info about it.
