I live in Virginia and I don't think we have any emissions standrards, so I'm curious if whether or not I can get headers put on my car. Where is the best place to look for this information

i dont know about your state laws but... most headers now are smog legal. which means they have the air tubes on them (if you didnt know) and if your not building a race car or really modding your motor i would just get a set up emission legal headers. that way if and when they do pass a law in your state (you have the emissions crap on there. thats just my $.02 though

Actually, headers is one area where you have emissions-legal replacement parts that are a big improvement over stock. SLP, Hedman, Edelbrock, Dynomax & Hooker all make certified parts for our cars. They include the A.I.R. & O2 fittings and a y-pipe to the cat that keep it all sniffer- and inspection-friendly.

A couple, Hedman I know for sure, make shorties that do not have the A.I.R. pipes for those that don't have emissions concerns. But, the emissions parts don't detract from performance significantly, so why not go ahead and keep it? You may move to an emissions inspection/testing area some day, or the Feds may move into your neighborhood! If the stuff is there, you're prepared for them.

The best place to start to find out your local requirements is your local department of motor vehicles, where you get your registration. If they can't answer your questions, they should at least be able to steer you in the right direction.

Yes, in Virginia you either have to have all the emissions "stuff", or take you car to an inspection station that never looks under the hood. When I bought my 81Z it had nothing under the hood but the engine, a disconnected charcoal filter can and an aftermarket (darn it!) air filter housing. For some reason (??) the inspector/inspection station I'd been going to for 8 years suddenly went nuts and wanted to look under the hood. Of course the first thing they do is scrape out the old sticker so after looking under the hood he made a lot of comment I disagreed with, put a rejection sticker in the window and walked off. I get my vehicles inspected somewhere else now (with 5 vehicles they've missed out on a few bucks over the last 4 years). Taking that stuff off is taking a chance on inspection problems unless you know someone who'll pass it anyway.
