Need help with exhaust decision...
Hey guys , Im 16 and i just purchased an 88 Iroc Z with a 305 and i have been having a hard decision choosing which exhaust to get. I have decided to get TES edelbrock headers, high flow cat, and i have been having trouble deciding either to get flowmasters american thunder cat back or buy the 80 series and just get custom exhaust off of that. But i want to know which one will be the loudest and sound the best. Well thanx for all of your help .

Get THE exhaust system, not JUST the muffler.

I see this so often that I must say something.
Loudness is not an indication of automotive excellence. Never buy an exhaust system simply to make your car loud. That only tells people that you are a teenager, either in fact or in maturity.
A high performance exhaust system should be purchased and designed to extract (or release, as one's conviction may be) the maximum amount of horsepower and torque from the engine at hand. The level in decibels that this provides is in no way related to success of the former objective, other than it will usually be somewhat louder.
To my mind, a quieter muffler will provide a stealth aspect to your car, an understated tone of unconcern that the person next to you, revving the snot of his motor, is anything to be taken seriously. You simply step on the gas and your well designed and balanced Camaro walks all over the juvenile's attempt at performance car heroics.

Unfortunately, my learned brethren Sitting Bull failed to mention the "chick-appeal" inherently associated with a louder exhaust. Let's not misdirect ourselves, we do this mostly for the speed, BUT the members of the opposite sex that see a car as a status symbol will appreciate the louder exhaust more.
To put it simply, I got more chicks when I was running open exhaust, than when I bought a Flowmasturbator cat-back.

So do Ricers with Wet Fart Mufflers get more chicks?
I agree with the Sitting Bull, exhaust are designed to get maximum performance out of your cars engine and a cool deep throated muscular tone is a byproduct.

NT,
It would also be a mistake to believe that every girl out there is completely ignorant when it comes to cars!
Personally, I would want one that could think her way through the "loud exhaust is manly" syndrome and understood that a great car is a combination of parts chosen for performance--not merely sound
In other words, you want an intelligent woman, not a hussy that throws herself at every loud car that goes by.

When I ran around with open headers for awhile NOBODY would pull up to me at a stop light and try to race me and 9 out of 10 times the person walking down the street would turn their head and stare. Now since I put on my Hooker Aero-Chamber 3" people are starting to try to race me again and nobody turns their head ...I think the "sleeper" affect is the best.
I agree with Sitting Bull's post. Especially about people picking the exhaust system solely on the sound.
Then I notice everyone else who also shares that viewpoint has a Walker muffler..
I think cars can sound "good" without sounding "loud".

Mmph, I agree totally from a enthusiasts standpoint. A quieter exhaust is, overall, a better idea.
But, unfortunately, there aren't too many "car crazy cuties" out there, that can make the link between a quiet rumble, and horsepower.

All your fighting is stupid, just help the kid out... go with the hooker cat-back it is as loud as you would need it but more importantly its mean, it has 3 inch piping for maximum HP gain and looks nice too, the girls will like it and everyone will know you have a bad *** car, although I prefer my formula to a camaro.. girls know tough guys drive pontiac, jk guys
have fun with your new car...

Go with hooker,
Good sound that you won't be dissapointed by. Docile idle but roars when you step on it. A perfect balance of both. However I must stress to anyone buying hooker cat back. DON"T USE THE CHROME TIPS. They rust all over in about 2 MONTHS TIME. The chrome plating is very thin and will rust in between the pipes in no time. Makes my car look crappy. On a good note, I was having problems with my baby and she was runnin rich and helped cover some of that rust in the tips with soot.

I've had my Hooker cat-back installed for like 2 weeks and the tail pipes are completely rusted. The I-pipe looks brand new and so do the tips though ...weird.

When you've got a motor with lots of power it doesn't matter which exhuast or mufflers you've got it will just sound MEAN! My Camaros exhaust is loud but I can also back it up!
