flowmaster 80 series = sucks

Ok, i installed the 80 series one week ago from today, now i have heard that they get louder, but im disapointed. Its so quiet, its loud inside the car, but everyone else has told me that it sounds almost the same outside the car, and i'v heard like 3 other third gens with flowmaster's that sound SO awsome, i have a gutted cat, so shouldn't that make it louder????!!
the only thing i can think of it that i, for now, only have a 2.25" 90* pipes coming from the muffler that only extend about 3 inches in front of the muffler, about 16" from the back of the car, and im gonna put on 4"x18" tips on those, will that improve the sound, or at least put it where it belongs, not inside the car? or should i sell the flowmaster and buy something else?

i'll post a pic of the muffler i had before, but i'll give a brief explanation of it now, its a two out on the left, with a 3" inlet, and two 2.25" outlets both exiting on the left, and if u look through the inlet u can see straight through, perfect airflow, but it was soooo much quieter then the majority of third gens iv heard, and my friends 2.8L sounds better then my 5.7L. wut mufflers do most guys have? and why does mine sound so crappy? would changing y-pipe or putting on headers help?

Welcome to the club. I have the same problem as you and to top it off mine make a big whooshing sound during WOT. I'm looking into Random techs aluminum muffler or a Spintech muffler myself.

it takes weeks if not months to break in. Sound is a product of air being moved, move more air and you get more sound. ie, headers, gut the cat, 3" I pipe....

I agree, the lower the series, the louder the sound.

Even though the cross-flow is a 2-chamber type muffler there is no real loudness increse, just a change in the exhaust note.

Put some headers on and I promise that you will get the noise you are looking for.

I have the 80 series muffler and Im not dissapointed at ALL!

I have a high flow Cat, and a 3inch pipe from the cat to muffler. My car isnt even close to quiet. At idle its got a nice low rumble. Then when you accelerate normaly its got a nice growl behind it inside and out. And when you get on it, it sounds sooo awesome!

I think you should give it time to break it in, it should sound way better then you described.

I go down a side street @35mph and people lookup 5-7 houses away!

i thought it was the other way around, well i might of been wrong, but the only problem is how am i gonna fit a 50 or 40 series on with dual exhaust? i didn't think they made them for those, at least not the type that exit left and right towards the rear, i thought those were more for truck applications. can ya give me a part # or somthing.

I had an 80 series on my 86 trans am..stock 305 motor, cat, and pipes, and it sounded real nice...kinda growly. But I put a 40 or 50 series (whichever comes with the American Thunder kit) on my 92 z28 and it was VERY loud inside the car...that was with the flowmaster 3" pipes, though...still stock 305 and cat...

well by 4" i mean 3.5", you know the ones that 50% of f-body's have on em now. and about 90% of the kind that trucks put on aftermarket dual exhaust. not that rice ones that are like 6"x6" (coffe can)im talking about 20"x4" tips, the ones that look good. at least im pretty sure they are 3.5-4"

anyways..... the ones like these

iv heard that it helps to echo the sound.. rather then keeping the same size.

I got an 80 series on my car, its been on there forever as far as I know (ive only had the car just under a year) and while it has a nice sound to it, its just not loud enough for me.. so I'm getting a cutout which should arrive tomorrow, which is rather illegal and comes complete with annoying vibrations and poping! But the hell with it, i want it louder and this is the only way I can think of.. (i already have headers/random tech high flow cat)

Give it two-three months ( maybe a little longer) and your car will sound bad a$$. I had an 80 series on my old 91 bird and it sounded amazing. I just put a 50 series on my s-10 blazer and it's friggen loud too.

Why is that? Not that I'm saying it doesn't happen, seeing as a lot of people have reported this, but why does a flowmaster get louder? I thought it was all just metal chambers on the inside. I have the american thunder cat-back, does this mean mine is going to get louder?

my 40 series never got any louder, just the 80. It must either get heat treated or coated with soot or something.

I have a 91 Z28 with a 350. I got a flowmaster 80 series muffler. Right when i got the muffler it wasn't loud at all, a couple months later it got a little louder, but I wanted it alot louder. I went to summit and purchased an exhaust cut out and had it installed just before the muffler and after the cat. What a difference in sound that made. Now it sounds so mean and you can hear it coming from a good distance away. At low rpm's to about 2500 it's very deep, once you get on the gas, it sounds like a big block. At idle the car shakes pretty good from the exhaust dumping out at the cut-out. I recommend it and I ran my car at the track with my cutout uncapped the whole time and then on the last three runs I capped it and my car went two tenths slower all three times. I believe it also gave a me a power increase as well as an awesome sound.

Don't know if it'll fit on a third gen, but the 20-series Delta Flowmaster sound AWESOME! I have a friend with a 95 Z28 Camaro with 20-series Delta Flowmasters, stock manifolds, stock cat, and the thing sounds great! It has the 6-speed, so that might make a difference, but it still is great. It isn't loud inside, but it is loud as hell outside. You can hear him coming from a mile away, but can't really even hear the mufflers that much inside the car. I want to find some of these for my car!

Not at all. By the time I took it from the cam corder to video tape, then video tape to my computer through my ATI card, THEN turned it into mpeg format there was MAJOR sound quality loss. If I wanted it to sound good, the video would have been huge. So smaller files = crappy sounding.

So actually the videos make my car sounds like poop.

Aight- I have a 1990 Iroc with the stock 305 TPI engine...I have the 80 series muffler, and I guess mine is kinda the odd one, cause it has pretty much sounded the same ever since I got it. Its really burbly at idle-1500 rpms, and its more noticeable outside the car at any rpms higher than that...I always cruise with the windows down- even in the winter, just to hear the exhaust growling...guess im kinda hardcore

I think some of you have to realize, throwing on a muffler is not gonna make ur car sound as loud as the local rail car at the strip. If you want your car to be real loud, you have to go with a full 3" cat-back and if u want it to be louder, get yourself some headers and straight 3" pipe for a cat. No muffler will ever match that sound, no matter how many holes u put in ur muffler and duct tape u use.

true true eric, a muffler doesn't do much when the pipe coming into it is a crimped 2.25" pipe. I should know

I got some cat back system that was installed before i got the car, thats why i had so much trouble getting the muffler on. But the main reason i say mine isn't that loud is because I AM comparing it to other third gen, 350's and 305's and even 2.8 (WHICH MY CAR IS FINALLY LOUDER THEN MY FRIENDS 2.8, I THINK THOUGH THAT THERE IS NOTHING IN HIS MUFFLER BUT OPEN SPACE D)) but the 3.5" tips helped alot since the exhaust exited from BEHIND the car not underneath. pics coming soon i promise!!

Cat-back systems come with tips and muffler with them. So if u still had the stock muffler and tips, chances are u didn't have a cat-back on there. And I don't know any cat-back system that had tips that pointed down. So I think whoever told u it had a cat-back was possibly giving u a line of bullsh*t.

NO NO, it didn't have the original tips, it had a two on the left type muffler that had a STRAIGHT shot throught the muffler, was suprising quiet for a straight shot, VERY quiet. And the pipe from the cat back is all 3" mandrel bent, however i don't know if stock is that way or not. it MIGHT be stock, cause i have seen some stock exhaust that has the two on the left outlet. again i'll try to have pics of all this stuff tomorrow when i get my camera back.!!

yeah I have to say I HATE FLOWBASTARD. Last August I put on the flowbastard 80 series, and I liked it. It made alittle noise (at the time I was STOCK) Well I just put on finished the exhaust with Hedman headers, high flow cat, 3 inch pipe and that stupid flow bastard. and it is not as loud as i wanted or would like or expect. BlackBird305 says it is prolly my 2 inch tail pipes so i will take that, but i am still skeptical. My friend has a 91 rs same set up same everththing except he has Dynomax muffler, and his is LOUDER THEN HHELL!! I tell ya this, I am gettin rid of my flowbastard.

Ya, my 3.5 inch tips have made a big difference in the sound, i think it sounds alot better, and its finaly as loud as a couple other people i know with it on their cars.

It boggles the mind how 3 people with a 350 and the same setup have such different outcomes with there 80 series!

i love my 80 series.i have a 305 TBI(look in sig)and my car sounds awesome.i still have the manifolds, stock 2.25 pipe,a Catco cat, which i now swear by,and the 80 series, which ive had for about 3 months now.i listened to it the other day when i let a buddy drive it,and from 70 to even 200 feet away you could hear it make a sweet rumble as it drove away, and that was only normal driving,i have no idea how good it sounds at WOT.ill check it out someday.and also mine did take about a month to get louder.and it just seems to get better.so as you can prolly tell i am a full fledged believer of flowmaster.cant wait till i get a 3 inch pipe and my hooker dual 3 inch tips on!!i just might need to change my pants first time i hear it...

just give it time..it'll get louder..and the cars you thought sounded awesome probably had 40s on..mine took about 6, 7 months to "break in" I dont drive my car much so I'm sure if you drive it every day or so it will "break in" quicker

I like my 80, its not really loud yet (got it in late june) but they do get louder. Forgive me for making this example but a freind of mine's mustang got much louder over the last year with his 2 40's on it. Whaty i don't get though, is HOW they get louder over time. I mean, if you look at the cutaway, theres no packing or anything to burn out. I don't quite get how it works, but whatever. It does.
