what's the down low on magnaflow?

i went into des moines best muffler shop. I happen to know the manager and he knows his sh*t...BUT, i wanted to get opinions from those who know how it performs with thirdgens.

he basically told me that flowmaster has a better sound with a 2 yr warranty against manufacters defects, but their muffler's arent worth a damn internally, and their catback system weighs a lot more than the flowmaster. He said that magnaflow is the best muffler you can get...straight-thru design, all stainless steel (guts too) backed with a lifetime warranty.

I have been skimming through the threads and it seems that no one really has anything bad to say about magnaflow, but I dont know what it sounds like. everyone and their brother has a flowmaster, and i like the sound, but i want something that will last, and i want something different than the 'other guy'.

so does anyone have any sound clips of a magnaflow catback/muffler on their third gen? any other comments are appreciated.

-Josh

my brother has the Magnaflow kit on his..He likes it & think it is ok.He likes My Banks exhaust better and so do I ,PLus mine was less! ..The magnaflow is very mellow throughout the RPM range and if you like that sort of thing it is good. The banks on the other hand is mellow as well until you jump on it and then it really will Bark at you..and others!..both are stainless steel,so check all your options first IMO

How does Flowmaster flow compared to other mufflers....magnaflow, ravin, banks? More flow = more hp right?

IMO flowmaster flows like sh*t compared to magnaflow. if you look at the interior design of the muffler, you will see that magnaflow has a straight through design, where as flowmaster has a design that causes the exhaust to go back against itself to go out the other tailpipe, thus creating less flow than magnaflow.

I have not heard the Ravin on a 3rd gen, only on a 4th gen.It is definately louder than mine and resonated badly inside the vehicle.I know there are a few others here that have the Banks kit..so post guys!..Keep in mind though that the Banks systems were just recently introduced to the public market,so there is not alot of us that have the system on yet..I will say it is a great sounding system, and the price is hard to beat..

you can get the Banks system from them direct @ 626 691 2158 and some select dealers are carrying it again as well...i.e www.speeddemonmotorsports.com ,thunder racing ,more performance etc. all have it or can get it for you!..it is all stainless and IMO the best way to to for the $$$..It sounds awesome and the extra performance is definately noticeable.

With that Banks setup is there a kit you can bolt up or do you have to customize it? Or is it just the muffler?

It is a complete bolt on cat back system!...All stainless and IMO ,probably one of the best if not the best kit out there!..They even have the optional y-pipe off of the manifolds if you want that as well. For a stainless system the price is excellent, and the sound and performance is killer!

you will not find it on banks' website anymore!..You will need to call them direct @ 626 691 2158 and they will give you what you need. i think the part #'s were 49102,49106 & 49111 for the different engines etc...But i may be wrong on that one?...I have also heard that once Banks re-releases their twin turbo kits onto the market, the exhaust kits would be featured highly again, but they are available now!

i called them and the price is the SAME as magnaflow! i thought you said it was cheaper by like 50%?! it was $399 for the system plus $42 shipping. so why go with banks when its the same price as magnaflow?

Josh-I said in another thread it was about Half the price of a Borla!,which it is...I am aware price wise it is about the same as Magnaflow, but it sounds MUCH better IMO...The Magnaglow kit is too quiet and really doesn't do the vehicle justice whereas the Banks kit is nice and tame under normal driving conditions, but once you get on it then it will really wake up!..It is up to you man,but IMO the banks kit is far superior.

Jees man, all I said was "all I can say is spintech" I think. I don't think I really went out of my way to rub it in. Sorry, don't have a sound clip, but do a search, Evil has a clip if you want to hear the oh so sweet sound. -89IRO

Why not just buy one from the ONLY company that rates their mufflers with CFM?

DYNOMAX!!!!

They're the only company that will actually do that. They tried multiple times to get some other companies to use CFM flow (kind of like cams use dur. @ .050"), so the consumer could buy the RIGHT muffler, and equally compare them all.

Most of them said "No. That would only confuse the consumer."

Are those dynomax bullet mufflers straight-through? Didn't someone say they are like the loudest muffler out there? They would be cool I guess if you wanted a really loud dual setup. -89IRO

They make a 3" in with two 2 1/2" pipes out, that flows enough for 427 HP. It's a crossflow like the stock mufflers, and it's relatively quiet until you romp on it.

And honestly.......
If you're pushing more HP than that, 'quiet' should be the LAST thing on your mind.

http://www.dynomax.com/documents/ultrafloweld_specs.pdf

If you look at the numbers above the muffler, the 940 is the CFM flow, and the 427 is how much HP you can run BEFORE the muffler starts to restrict flow at all. The 854 is if you were to run two of them, but that would seem to be a little difficult to do.
