headers in general questions

oook, i decided to make headers my first mod, just get it over with =)
ok, if your a cheap *** like me, and install them yourself, like im planning, can you drive it maybe a 15 minute tops drive to a muffler shop to get it welded, will there be any problems? how much did you guys have to pay to get them welded?
another thing is, i was looking at the slp headers like 500 bucks i think, is it worth it to put out that much cash for them? or is there a lower cost ones that do the same, i mean is there that much of an advantage with slp's over the other ones to compensate the high $$
do you have to cut anything off of the stock exhaust pipe to make them fit?
what size headers are the best, if not the BEST, then whats the pro's and con's of smaller and largers headers.
oh yah, and i was looking into used headers and exhaust systems, is there a huge problem with using used exhaust stuff, will it just break down and cost me more money than i have?? sorry for the long list of questions, im just trying to get my bearings so i have a better understanding of the equipment involved. thanks in advance!!

You could drive with open headers, the only problem will be the police. If pulled over just say you're on your way to get a muffler welded on. Word of advice, I have driven with open headers. If you cruise about 55 mph they won't be that loud. Most likely a cop will give you an inspection slip that you'll have to get signed. SLP's seem to be the best headers available, but if it were me and I was just doing a few minor mods to a 305 I would go with something cheap like Edelbrock, however if you plan on putting out some serious HP I would go with SLP.

im doing the same, contimplating weather to spend the extra $$ with slp, or stick with edelbrock, but i think im going with edelbrock, because im only 16 and i dont think my cars worth that much, but yea, and headers REPLACE your exaust manifolds, so yes you have to take them off

if you don't need to meet emissions, then I would get hedmans 1 5/8 shorties and Y pipe for around $200

Not to be rude or anything, but you're going to be putting the headers on yourself and you didn't know whether or not you had to take off the exhaust manifolds. As a word of advice have someone helping you. Again don't take that the wrong way.

I think inspections vary from state to state but for the most part make sure the car is safe. Like do your turn signals work, backup lights, no cracks in the windshield, stuff like that. Emissions tests for pollutants that your car puts out.

I'm not sure about you state, but I thought it was 50 state legal to have cut-outs, as long as they have a cap for the street.
