dual exhaust

anybody converted or seen a thirdgen camaro with true-dual exhaust? from the headers, no y-pipes. anybody got some suggestions for a new exhaust system? i was thinking about SLP headers, not sure about the cats (another topic talked about Catco cats being pretty good) and i thought that Borla made a dual exhaust (muffler and tailpipe only) kit for 3rdgens. can anyone confirm that for me? and help is appreciated.

the never ending quest.
if only you knew how many times this has been asked.
you can do this...but its a custom job, no one makes a kit IIRC.
if you make a custom one, it will most likely require ground clearance sacrifices....you will scrape...

good luck

I thought if you got headers you HAD TO have a true dual exhaust?

Nope. Most headers for thirdgens use a Y-pipe that dumps out at the stock location. Eeven if you use long tubes, Mufflex makes a custom Y-pipe. I'm running full duals now, and I'm about to change out to the SLP 1 3/4 to a Mufflex 4". I'm tired of the ground clearance problems. With the rear lifted 1/2" I still only had 2 inches of clearance for the mufflers.

I think its really much more simple than many people make it out to be. But 2 draw-backs:

1) It wont be legal.

2) You will lose some clearance.

I plan on running hooker comp. headers to pipes straight back and then a muffler on each pipe dumped right before the axle.
Whenever I actually get it done, I'll show some pics.

its really not that easy.
i have hooker 1 3/4 long tubes (super comp)
and the mufflex Y pipe and it scrapes all day long. even the header collectors scrape sometimes, and my car is stock height

I wish I had a digital camera so you guys could get a look at mine. it is simple...two 3in pipes coming off the headers, with a 2.5in H-pipe. They run all the way back to the mufflers which are under the rear seat. I had to do some work on the rear seat floorboard for ground clearance, but they really do not scrape all that often. My air dam scapes 10 times as much

Whats up man?

I should check out your set up sometime. I want to do the same thing pretty soon.
Did you have a shop do it for you...no cats?
What do you plan on doing to smog it every two years?

What about side pipes? I know some people don't like them, but doesn't that solve most of the issues with dual exhaust? I think they look pretty damn cool... I myself have trouble with the downturned exhaust that came stock on my car, it bottoms out whenever I go up an abrupt incline...

Fact is, no single exhuast 3inch, 4 inch, 22 inch, doesn't matter, will ever be as effective as a dual exhuast. Not because of reduced back pressure, as a single pipe can be just as efftive, but the gases have to meet someplace and when they do you will have TERRIBLE turbulance problems. Why do you think new Vette owners find 4 tenths of a second in 1/4 times regular just by going to a true dual setup on a stock LS1? Can you name a single pipe that will do that?

A few snags and scraps are worth it to eliminate a power restriction like the stock exhuast. Just listen to the 3 and 4 inch systems for our cars. They SOUND restrictive compared to any 2.5 inch Dual setup. If they SOUND restrictive, I can only imagine what is actually going on, but I know it's not good.

I have a shop that will do it. I am from IL and the car is still registered there so that is how I get away with smog.

TRUE DUAL EXHAUST WITH NO CLEARANCE PROBLEMS
Spin tech Cruiser series mufflers 2 1/4 thick (called cruiser because it was designed for hotrods with little ground clearance) or the oval sportsman street is 3 in thick but used oval tubes which are available in circle track catalogs. I'm usint the 2 1/2 in pipes with cruisers, myself. www.spintechmuffler.com they started by making race mufflers, so it's probably good stuff. Plus I've been checking a lot of website of shops that do custom dual exhaust and 3 brands of mufflers came up most often--Borla, Flowmaster, Spin Tech. Not bad company.

Just got an email back from spin tech. They said that the cruiser series would not be the best for our cars. However, if you want to put the money into an oval pipe system, they have a 3" thick muffler that should be great.

I told them I was also thinking about changing out the panhard brace to one that allows two pipes to go over the rear axle and then putting mufflers beside or under the trunk. They said do that and they recommended their Pro Street series muffler--basically a race muffler with a little more sound deadening.

Of course, once you change out the panhard brace, you can go with any mufflers under or beside the trunk.

Spintech Mufflers, are wicked. I've got the 4" mufflex with the single hideaway tip resonating off of the ground. Sounds like a thousand pit bulls ready to bit you in the ****.
