I blasted all the black coating off of mine at work. I then bought some 1500* paint from Wally-World and followed the directions. Mine is still on, but I have yet to drive in the rain or bad weather. It has maybe 300 miles on it.

If you don't have access to a sand blaster I used lots of laqure (something like that) thinner. Paint came right off, then sprayed them up with the high temp paint.

I've used the 1200* spray paint with ceramic coating, lasted about a month and now is starting to burn and chip off. I'm sure 1500* would hold up.

Nope, I used the 1500 degree on mine, and it lasted about three months before it started flaking off. Nothing is as good as getting them coated.

Someone said to use the high temp POR20 but another guy that I talked to )that worked at Jet Hot) said none of that stuff is worth your time and effort. Only ceramic coating by a professional is, he said.

what about powder coating -- does this stuff hold up under the weather? I have a local powdercoating place and am getting longtubes soon so would this be as good as ceramic like jet hot in terms of longevity?

I would agree that ceramic coating is the best. Gee, I'm kind of surprised someone from Jet-Hot suggested that!! I have heard great things about the coatings from Eastwood Co. I have yet to try them though. I don't think powder coating would be good. I think it would start to lose its bond with the metal, and chip off, I guess like paint would. We use something similar to this at work on our engines, but as soon as they are fired in the test cells, all the exhaust manifolds, and turbo housings start to rust. These things generate tremendous heat, more than a car engine, but I still think powder coating would come off also.

ya I'm not surprised either. Take everyone's advice with a grain of salt and use your own judgement in the end, always.

I don't think powder coating is meant for that high of a temp. I used one can of high temp spray paint($6) sure the y-pipe is a little rusty already 3-4 months, everyday driving, but I can't see paying 60-70% of the cost of my headers to make them last forever. If you're paying alot for the headers like Long Tubes, probably worth it to get them coated, but regular $300-350 shorties w/y-pipe, just paint them. Unless you need that show car kind of look. Getting beat by a POS is still getting beat and it sucks, all my money is into speed right now,(and keeping it on the road(daily driver)) after that then I'll worry about looks. Just my opinion.

But Beast it is more than the looks I think. If the paint is falling off then it isn't efficiently retaining heat. I don't care how they look either but if it keeps under hood temperature down then performance stays up

I've never been satisfied with any of the hi-temp paint that I've tried on headers.
A good coating (jet-hot,etc.)is the only thing that will hold up over any real length of time.I haven't tried the Eastwood stuff, though I've seen it in the catalog.
Usually I just blast off the factory paint, squirt on some VHT 1400 degree flat black and touch it up when it's needed.
SLP headers currently in my 92 are unpainted stainless. Not real attractive, but not rusty either.

A friend of mine used the Eastwood type stuff on his exhaust manifolds when he put a 350 SBC into a 87 Mustang. Yeah, he really did it. But you have to heat them to about 600* after application. If you run the engine for awile, it should work. His were coated for a good year until he sold it. We lost track after that.

FWIW, I got a couple of cans of DEI 1500 degree paint from Summit when I got my headers. It says on the can "For header wrap and exhaust".

I haven't painted them yet, but I'm not holding my breath that the paint will last like ceramic coating, even if I follow the directions to the letter. But, if it at least saves the y-pipe, I'll consider it worthwhile.
