GM really screwed up on making exhaust systems for our thirdgens!
We all know that basically every bit of the stock exhaust SUCKS but now I have seen something that truely pisses me off. My friend has a 85 TA with a 305 TPI and an automatic. Anyways, it has the stock exhaust on it. The muffler just fell off of it and I saw something incredibly stupid. The intermidiate pipe is 2 1/2" which isn't that bad for an exhaust. But right where the I pipe connects to the muffler, the pipe necks down to 2 inches. That's horrble. I can't believe that GM would actually put this crap on one of their cars. What were they thinking. That's a major restiction to the exhaust. Sorry but I'm just mad that they don't know sh*t about exhaust flow.

You think thats bad, you should see where the two collectors come together at the "Y". On some cars, its almost a 90º angle! And on dual cat cars, the two pipes are squished together on the passenger side. I ran 2 1/2" pipe thru there fairly easily, and changed the exit after the cats to a better angle.

Yeah, my Y-pipe had a 90 degree angle also. That's why I ripped that son of a b*tch off very shortly after I got my car.

What were they thinking?????
I'll tell you exactly what they were thinking.
They were thinking that Camaro's are meant to be performance cars for a cheap price... they leave things like aluminum heads, and good exhaust to the more expensive Corvettes. Our exhaust is problably the cheapest way they could find, to have decent performance while still having the dual exhast look.
Think about it..... our cars are ****ing awesome considering how cheap they were when they were new.

Also, GM puts pretty much the same drivetrains in the Camaro, Firebird, and the Corvette. But they can't have the F-cars being as fast as the Vette. And the easiest way to "de-tune" a powerplant a bit is by increasing exhaust restrictions. So maybe they were just being cheap, but *maybe* they did it on purpose. You'd be pretty pissed if you just blew a trucload of money on a Vette and discovered you couldn't pull on an F-car that cost way less.
i agree with the vette thing and they probably did dome of it for emission reasons too. BUT the whole design of it sux, if theres one thing i dont like about these cars its the stupid y-pipes and where it hangs down right below the passenger seat. i HATE that it looks like crap and is a poor design shoot me for saying it but the ford guys made a much better exhaust

Yeah, they do make a much better exhaust. Plus, either the ford engines are more efficient as far as power from cubes goes (even though the mileage is worse), or ford underrates its engines.
I think the Mustang is actually a better designed car EXCEPT--
It's horribly ugly, outside and in.
It's taller and narrower--looks like
passenger car from a distance, whereas
you can always tell an F-body
I like bigger engines.
It's a ford.
It's horribly ugly.
GM may not be making new ones, but F-bodies will always be better!

well backin 85 GM's camaro use the same powerplant on the Corvette even though the corvette had a 350 camaros got 305, Understand that the corvette is top dog and power must be restricted on camaros, so in went a restrictive exhaust system, restrictive air intake, ie making the corvette more powerful

speaking of exhaust flow, Which do u think is better. hooker LTs/mufflex y-pipe(3"/3.5"if they make it) to a dump before the cat(s), or true 3" duals to mufflers(probably spintech)? Also hp loss in a 500hp engine (single 3" w/y-pipe vs. true dual 3")

Well, I think headers should have been stock... thats about my only complaint.
You know that Mustangs came with the option for headers... my friend's GT Stang came with 'em stock and he's got the option to put true duals on because the Mustang didn't have to compete with a Ford equivalent of a Corvette.

u think the 90* t intersection on the y-pipe is bad, look at where it goes by the oil pan. that y-pipe is a piece of poopy.

Even most of (all) the aftermarket header kits that are shorties have a pretty nasty bunch of restrictive bends to them.... I plan on Hooker LTs and the Mufflex Y as soon as the funds are available..... That setup looks pretty damn nice aside from the slight decrease in ground clearance..... and price..........
