i have edelbrock tes chromies... did i mess up?

i did a search... couldnt find what i was lookin for...

its not a question of "did i mess up for buying edelbrocks" but it is a question of "i got the chromies, and without a coating(jet hot, lets say) will they look all right?"
i am wondering if they will end up loooking like crap after a few thousand miles... does anyone have pictures of their chrome tes headers on there car after a thousand miles or so?

thanks peeps...

I have heard they the chrome will discolor after a while and will not provide any of the performance benefits of coating.

That's what I've heard too....I bought the un-coated dual cat set up headers for my 91...and I'm going to send them to JET HOT next week to get them coated. :lala:

i also have the TES headers. but now i dunno if i made the right choice going with those. before i bought 'em i didn't realize that the primary size tubing decreases big time at the collectors. you can see it somewhat in that pic. i dunno if this is just an edelbrock thing or if all headers primaries have this "flattened" shape near the collector. but i'm guessing this has to create a major restriction for airflow.

My newest JEG's catalog shows an edlebrock set of headers noted as coated, but they are all of $20-$30 more than the regular ones. Anyone know what type of coating they are referring to?

I'm pretty sure those are just the Nickel-Plated Headers..

I'm wondering about that size change as well? Other other headers like that? I am thinking of getting the Edelbrock TES headers, but not if others are larger in that manner or better?

Yeah, they're nickel plated. They look great for about a week - then they turn kinda bluish in color. I hav'nt tried cleaning them up or anything.

Course, I kind of expected that to happen. Fact is, they still hold up way better than non-coated headers, and should last quite awhile.

I have the set for the H.O., and I don't recall the Y-pipe looking that small. Not saying it wasn't though. Pretty much all the "shorty" headers are about the same. I put the Hooker catback on a month or so after the headers, and I felt a SOTP difference!!

Pretty quiet when idling, but when you lay into it...sounds like it wants to eat something!! lol !!

IMO, I don't think you made the wrong choice at all. Sure Jet-coat is better - and you'll pay for it too.

BTW...really??? I think the plating was more than a mere 20-30 buck difference IIRC....

Don't automatically think "bigger is better" for headers. Tighter tubes keep the gases flowing faster, which increases scavenging and helps low end torque. You have to match them to your engine. High revving free breathers will benefit from bigger tubes, but stock or even mildly modded engines built for street use will do best with smaller tubes.

It will start to turn purple and blue in a little while.

That's why Sterling Jet Hot is expensive, it protects and won't change color.
