What is the best sounding exhaust system??

I'm considering purchashing a new exhaust system for my 91' Camaro and am wondering what you guys feel is the best choice. I'm also going to get headers, I hear SLP is a good choice.

I had a Dynomax muffler on mine which was nice but mellow. It reminded me of a factory 60's muscle car. I switched to a Flowmaster and got a much louder and metallic tone. I kind of like it, it gets attention. These were both without the cat.

As for SLP, I don't know anything except that they seem overpriced.

Get the Hooker cat-back, I love the sound of mine and there are sound clips somewhere on this board.

I have heard a LOT of good things about the mufflex systems with either the flowmaster of spintech (go with spintech!) mufflers.

if you want more a "Sleeper" and want it really loud also get BORLA

I have a 350, edelbrock headers, catco high flow cat, and borla 3" adjustable cat.

I have the 2nd biggest plate it, at idle its not that loud, touch the gas pedal and it roars.

I really like my Hooker system. Best all around I think. Great quality, not expensive like the Borla, not super common like the Flowmaster. The SLP headers are excellent quality (from what I hear) and are the only stainless 1 3/4 shorties available for 3rd gens. Basicly go for the SLPs unless you are on a really tight budget, or are running a 305. Just my 2 cents, there are a million opinions about the SLP headers out there.

I have a custom 3" exhaust w/ a flowmaster 80 series, 3" pipe in place of my cat and Edelbrock TES Headers w/ the 3" collector at the y-pipe. I LOVE the sound it makes and always get compliments on it. Check it out.

Then you hear wrong, these headers are among the worst as far as restriction goes, but if just being put on a mild 305, then they will do just fine.

For an excellent system with good sound and power and price, can't beat the Hooker. For serious mods, get a Mufflex 3.5" or 4" w/ spintech muffler. I have the 3.5" and it is absolutely killer. I could literally bust a nut just listening to my car. Seriously though, stay away from flowmaster....nothing but sound from them. Borla and SLP is very good if ya want stainless steel and check out Random Technology. Each of those exhausts produce good power and sound. Good luck!

I'm gonna make some sound files of my Hooker cat-back sometime soon. In the car I never realized how nice it sounded but last week I had a friend drive by me and a crowd of people and everyone turned to see what was flying by "damn that sounds good..."

Hey 88IROCTPI and Jono, i'm looking at the Hooker Cat-Back for my 89 Firebird Formula. 350 TPI 5.7L. Do you just have the Cat-Back system, or other mods like headers? Any info on the Cat-Back would be great also, Thanks!

My car is all stock under the hood with a gutted cat (which I never knew was gutted until I put the exhaust on). Not a single person has ever said my exhaust sounds bad. One of my friends used the word "respectable" sound. Its not extremely loud and annoying sounding but you'll turn your head to see whats flying by.

Thats sort of an ignorant thing to say, sorry. Flowmaster is not the best. It rusts and sounds tinny half of the time. I switched to borla from flowmaster and I am very glad to have done it. I have edelbrock headers, and the only thing good about them was the price, but any header offers vast improvement over stock exhaust manifolds.

I know the hooker cat back is pretty good quality, it is more mellow than flowmaster. Dynomax is quiet. Borla has a deep tone, very loud when you run it open. I've heard spintech makes nice sounding mufflers.

Flowmaster is still a kick *** exhaust. But for third gens I honestly can only recommend either Dynomax or Hooker for the money; especially Hooker.

Agreed, cheap and common without any serious advantage over anything else, all show no go. Flowmasters are restrictive more or less because they're built for sound, not performance.

Who needs a muffler. run straight pipes that is what i have been doing for 2 years. it sounds great. loud from out side. if u sent up the exhaust right it can even be quiet in the car. i made mine for 125 dollars. and it works well.
just my 2 cents

LOL Some of us have emissions. I am going to have to differ with what everyone so far has said. I love Mac. Raspy, loud, and deep. A friend of mine has a catback on his stock '86 Z28 305 TPI. I've road with him before when recieving compliments. Great sound, not a bad price $300, and very little restriction. To sum it up, I guess they have the tone of Borla with the raspy, growliness of Flows.

My .03 cents,
Matt

Hooker has one of the best sounding mufflers out ther with the Aero Chamber design. The Super Comp cat-back is quite healthy as well. Both have nice quiet idle characteristics, but make a lot of quality sound when you hammer it. Every Mudstain on the planet has Flowmasters, which is fine, and can sound pretty cool, but the Hooker stuff really makes a much better sound. Not only that, but you can actually hear your radio, and the person next to you with their mufflers. This is generally not the case with Flowmaster!!

I don't know how feasible this is, but it probably wouldn't be too difficult to adapt the 4th gen SLP Loudmouth exhaust to a 3rd gen. I believe any competent muffler shop could do it... which means that rules out every exhaust shop in Bryan/ College Station.

I like my exhaust better than anythign Ive ever heard.. Hooker Long Tube Super comps, custom 3" Y pipe into a 4" pipe that goes all the way back through a dynomax 4" race muffler. It also has a fabricated cut out so I can run it straight through 4" no cats. Now thats the sound of a muscle car

I am the odd ball but i love my edelbrock one. Its aluminum pipes and SS muffler looks beautiful underneigth. 0 Rust and guarenteed forever. The sound is stock at idle and highway cruisong speeds but when you get on it. It screams.

I set my self up with the Edelbrock 50-states legal headers (I live in Ca.) and used the Random Tech cat and cat-back system. I consider it an outstanding value for the buck. The kit went together as advertised. I don't recommend using clamps though. I've had mine welded up sold and it really makes a difference. The sound at idle is great and when you step on it - hard - it really produces some clean power. It's loud though so if you're shy it might not be the system.
