best performance and sounding exhaust

I've been readin the exhaust section for quite some time now and the question of the "best" exhaust system comes to into play but noone really seems to know the answer to the question. I see a big dispute between flowmaster, dynomax, hooker, etc and even mac which i havn't even heard of before. who has the best performance and sounding exhaust on the market? keep in mind i only have about 375-400 dollars to spend. Oh yeah my cars also a 350tpi.

Heres what I've found out. Apparently, all the aftermarket cat back systems will outflow stock, although some 3rd gens came with 3-in pipe in and out of cat, mandrel bent to muffler, with mandrel bent tailpipes, like my 85 tpi IROC. ,I believe these crossflow stock mufflers flow fairly good because of the fairly large one-inlet/dual- outlet configuration. However, according to cfm ratings, there is lots of variance, for instance, according to the Walker-dyno-max tech line, here are a few ratings they give for comparison purposes, : stock muffler -250/300 cfm, flow-master 80 series (crossflow) about 450/500, Walker dyno-max ultra-flow stainless 585, Walker ultra-flow welded(racing crossflow)940, open pipe,1100. As you can see, ultra-flow WELDED (#17227) would be the way to go. According to their tech line(#1-800-594-9815), this muffler is slightly louder than their stainless ultra-flow (#17266), which is only slightly louder than stock. To top it off you could gut/remove cat for some real flow. Hope this can help answer your questions.

That would depend on your exact application....try Dyno-max tech line they are very willing to give out part #'s but not prices..they refer you to Summit or Jegs,etc.............

Paul , you said brought up the walker 17227 Ultra Flo welded muffler . Do you have one? Does anyone else have one? I installed one on my car Saturday along with the 44063 and 43248 cat to muffler pipes. The 17227 has very impressive flow numbers and walker is right it is not very loud at all. Alot quiter than I was expecting. I was wondering how this muffler actually performed on cars and if it is any louder with gutted cat and/ or headers.

Hey 88WS5TA, I do not have that muffler yet, however, I'm very curious to know, How does it sound and perform compared to what you had before? Was your prior muffler stock? My 85 IROC TPI has stock muffler ,no headers. It sounded nice, and deep, not real loud before I "modified"the cat. Afterwards, exhaust with stock G.M. muffler got slightly throaty, deeper and has a slight "rap" going up the RPM. Pulls a little harder on top, too. With your ultra-flow, you'd hear more rumble, and unleash more restriction if you "modified" your cat. Typical stock cat flows around 300 C.F.M. MAX, I'm told. If this is true, the cat is like a cork in a otherwise free-flowing system. Good luck, man.

Paul, my car had a midas replacement jerry rigged exhaust on it when I bought the car. The exhaust consisted of a 2 1/4" intermeidate pipe it seamed very restrictive. The car struggled to make shift point at 4800. The car also has the original ,convertor (175,000 mi). I can tell a huge difference in performance and I believe the sound at idle is quiter than the stock muffler. At any RPM above idle the sound is awesome, very deep tone but it is not loud by any means. I would reccomend this muffler to anyone that wanted a not so loud exhaust with great flow. I will be modifing cat soon along with a Flowmaster "Y" at the head pipes. This sould give it a little more volume. I would love to hear some more input on this muffler .
If anyone has a Walker 17227 muffler let me know how you like it.
