82 Exhaust

Since the 1982 exhaust was different than the following years is there anything I should tell the guys at a shop to do different if I want an aftermarket system. Like should I tell them if they can install it how it would be in the later year's exhaust. What have you guys with 82's done?

The later exhaust replaces it OEM without any problems. You might let them know, since it will be alot different than stock(some shops don't like suprises).

How do you like your ravin setup? What did you tell the guys at the shop to do?

I had my cat & exhaust from the cat back replaced with a 86 system, it helped the car out alot after really looking at the Y pipe a few days ago, I replaced the rest of the exhaust with edelebrock tes headers, will let ya know what kind of improvement it does, mine is a 82 LG-4 now though it has TPI & 5speed and 373 gears

I was also wondering the same question as sc82ta. My 83 has the different setup as you all. Its good to know that a later year catback will fit without problems. Do you guys know how much it costs to have a shop put a catback in? I was thinking of doing it myself too.

before you do a catback, hit some bone yards and try and find some exhaust manifolds and a Y pipe from a TPI car, the LG-4 stuff is a joke compared to TPI or HO exhaust, personally I wouldn't do a catback till the cat forward system was changed.

thanks for the advice, I am actually planning on getting the hooker 2055's headers with the y-pipe. But now I know to put the headers on before I do the cat-back. I plant on putting a new cat and cat-back on myself so if I had a shop install the headers would it be safe to drive home with just headers and a y-pipe?

I've heard running with open exhaust like that is a good way to burn valves, why dont you install the headers yourself and save some bucks, if you take the A/C box of the passenger side of the car, it will make a header installation very easy, the box itself is very easy to remove as well.

Well, I guess I know not to do that . I was thinkin of maybe doing it myself. Here are a couple of questions for ya. How hard was the installation and how long did it take? Did you just put the car on ramps? And lastly, do you think a 17 year old like me, probably with the help of his dad can do it? Thanks alot.

mike took me about 6 hours to do mine, getting the old stuff off was more work than putting the headers on my car, I ran my car up on ramps and that was good enough, dont bolts anything down tight until everything is pieced together, if your A/C doesn't work or you dont want the system a A/C delete box makes changing plugs and working on the passenger side extremly easy, I'm adding a serpentine belt drive system to mine, since my a/c doesn't work anyways then I'm going to add the a/c delete box, will try and post some pictures this week, before you add this header system make sure it's 50 state legal and they have a bar label on them or you wont be able to get through a emmisions test.

The exhaust hangs at different points on later third gens. As in the mounts are in different places.

I plan on getting a flowmaster cat-back or hooker cat-back so do you guys think I should just bring it to a shop and have them install it since the mounts are in different locations? Do you think that would be a big problem if I installed it myself? Thanks.

Well, I'd have to look underneath both the 82 and the 90, or 91 to see if it would require different mounts or you could use your stock ones.

If you have the skills to weld the exhaust, mounting it yourself shouldn't be a problem.

I could look under my dads 86 and compare it to mine. I have little experience using a welder so I would probably have to stick to clamps and then maybe have an exhaust shop weld it in if its necessary.

If at some point it is going to an exhaust shop, I would let them handle everything.

How much do you think it would cost to have them install a cat converter and cat-back?
