SLP Headers, problems? No problems?
I am wanting to see who has had problems with their SLP headers fit and who has not. I would also like to know which headers you are having/not having problems with.
Examples:
My Dual cat no air headers hit the steering column
My single cat w/ air headers have no problems
I just want to see if there is any kind of a pattern.
Thanks,
Brian

I installed SLP 1 5/8" headers on my 305 last August. It does not have A.I.R. and is a single cat. I had no fittiment problems other than having to slightly bend one of the brake lines out of the way. Also had to remove the drivers side valve cover to get the header to slip into place.

lol i am back
anyway, slp coated non air 1 3/4 headers, for dual cats.
i moved all the brake lines behind the steering shaft, and i moved the steering shaft over as far as i could with out cutting up stuff. stock motor mounts with 75,000 miles. my passengers side fit right in no problems at all. my drivers side i had to lift the engine up on that side to get it to slid in. after all that it cleared barely. next was to pull it back out and make a slight dent in that one tube.
thats my story, :lala:
overall nice headers for the money but could of fit better without denting.
good luck.

Does the coating get damaged when you dent the tube for clearance? I'd like to get JetHot 1 3/4" SLPs, but I'd hate to get them and have to damage the coating to make them fit. (Would also hate test fitting them before sending them to JetHot too. LOL )

My 1-3/4 single cat w/AIR SLPs hit on the steering column, did the usual dent. You can dent the primary without messing up your coating, I used four thicknesses of denim rags and a 21oz. roofing hammer. Just don't start beating on it - tap, check - tap, check - test fit, etc. The only scratch i have is from the initial test fit when I found out that I had contact. It can be done.
BTW, my headers couldn't fit better otherwise.

Am I correct in saying that the SLP's are the only headers that come with a Ypipe for dual cat cars??? I might have to go with them instead of the Hooker LT's. It seems like just denting one primary and moving the steering column over isnt too bad.......that would be easier than shelling out all the $ for a custom exhaust to fit the Hookers, plus the ground clearance issue..........damn I wish I could make up my mind about headers....lol

With the 1 5/8" you shouldn't have to dent the headers or move the steering shaft. The brake line are the only thing that got close to my headers. If you get them coated that shouldn't be a problem. I would get them coated from SLP. A buddy of mine is having to remove his Jet Hot coated headers because they are starting to flake and rust. He has Hooker headers with JetHot coating.

1 5/8" with single cat. Headers bolted up fine and cleared steering shaft by alot. Had to bend brake line, but thats not really a problem. Y-pipe did not fit well at all - the driver's side crossover pipe was too long to fit into the y-pipe connection. I also bought *
* the 82-87 install kit. The modified A/C bracket provided by SLP was not modified nearly enough. It wouldn't even fit over the header tube, so I had to hack it. Then the bolt slot to allow adjustment to the A/C compressor is too small and I can't even fit the the stock size bolt onto it. Complete waste of money. It would have been easier and cheaper just to mod my stock bracket!

Got the 1 3/4 inch coated with air for single cat.
One of the primary tubes had to be dented to clear the stearing shaft (just a little) and bend break lines.
I put masking tape on the area i took the hammer to the coating was not damaged.
I have 114k on my car swaped the engine mounts with es polly ones and it made no differance as far as header clearance.

jet-hot coating normally tends to flake off and rust after a while unless the car is garage kept, my cars never see the inside of a garage unfortunently, out of 3 sets of jet-hot coated headers i've had on various cars they all seem to do it after a while

Ive installed...hooker, edelbrock, and hedman longtube headers and I have never had to do anything to any of them. None have every even came close to the steering shaft...
Maybe if you put them in from underneath you could have problems. I usually install from the top depending on the headers. The hedman LT's installed easily from underneath.
I want a bigger set of headers so I may go with 1 3/4'' slps im not sure.

I have slp 1/5/8 with air they fit perfect! I have had headers on my 4 wheelers jet hot coated, they were ran through mud and water and sand and rocks I had on them for years and it never once showed any ageing. Jet hot coating is great!

hi it is garage kept! but I have had jet hot headers on motor cylces and 4 wheelers. the 4 wheelers really take a beating in the mud and water and it has no effect on the jet hot.

I have the SLP Tri-Y 1 5/8" headers on my 1989 GTA. Installed them in 1990 and they are still going strong. No problems. Also installed the SLP stainless steel cat back exhaust system. Also still going strong. Car has the dual cats. Allen

i just finished the install on my Slp 1 3/4 headers. i had to bend the brake line and dent the header to avoid the steering shaft.

oh ya i forgot to add a i had to move the brake line like a 1/4 inch just so it didnt touch the header tube. only took a few seconds to do. I also made sure no wires touched the tubes especially the starter wires.......
