thinking of gutting cat . . ..
was just curious-w/ my car (check sig) i wanted to gut it, but noticed another small pipe coming out the side-which is one of the reasons i didn't want to cause i was afraid if the service engine soon light would come up-what is that little tube for, to check the fumes?
and would it make the exhaust sound louder?
thanks guys

thats the AIR pipe coming from the AIR pump, wont affect an engine light to come on (if your car was OBDII it would, but thankfully it is not)

gutting the cat is a bad idea.. you will actually lose power... it may be a little louder but loss of power is always bad... either leave it or get a high flow one or put a pipe in its place...
A gutted cat creates a big pocket in the exaust and instead of air going right out the muffle it will sit and build up and swirl around and cause pockets of crap..
so just remove it and place a pipe from y pipe to rest of exaust... granted you dont have emissions

Or you could do what a lot of us have already done. To eliminate the "lose of power" caused by the pocket left in the cat, Push a 2.25 in pipe through it.
I believe you should have dual cats so that should be the correct size tubing. If not, just get the size tube you need, it will only run you about $5 from pepboys. If you cut the welds where the pipe meets the ends of the cat(s) housing, you can slide the pipe right thoguh. Then weld it together and now you have a non-functional legal looking cat. Weld it to your exhaust and it looks just fine.
Hope that helps.

ok, sounds like a start-but the service engine soon light deffinately won't come on . . .is what your guys are saying right????
and i should get a pipe, drill through the cat and put it inside the cat right (just wanted to make sure I understood!)

or you could remove the air system completely then the tube wouldn't be there. BTW air does nothing to help your running emissions only emissions upon start up.
