flowmaster 40 series in a 3rd gen...???

my 87 ROC has a amaerican thunder flowmaster system in right now but i am not satisfied with the sound and i wont be until im getting the sound of the 40 series original flo mufflers. can i just swap in a 40 series with my 80 series (which i think it is, could be wrong)? i was reading something and i may be wrong but that the 40 series will not work in the stock style set up of a 3rd gen f body, is that true? would i have to get a custom exhaust done that will involve two 40 series mufflers so that i remain dual exhaust?

if you have the crossflow muffler on there with outlets on each side then you dont have duals, just dummy duals. As for the 40 series i think that the dual exits are on the left side of the car instead of on both sides. I dont know if you want the dual look or not but i saw some pics of a 30 series in Jegs, i dont think ive ever seen them on here before. 30 series might sound bad a$$, single outlet though.

All you need done with the 40s series, is just have a dummby pipe set up on the passenger side of the car. I had that done on my old 91 Z, and man did it sound awsome. All the 40s series has is a single outlet on the driver side, if you have a muffler shop cut inot the pipe right before it enters the passenger side of the muffler and run a dummy pipe out the passenger side, then it will look as good as an 80s series, but with a hell of a better sound.

the delta flow 40 series has dual outlets but on the driver side. same with the ss delta 40's but the original 40's have only one as stated above.

Jayhah2 is right. I saw and heard his exhaust set-up on his old 91 Z28....(40 series flowmaster) and the muffler shop made a dumby tailpipe, made me wanna hack my 80 series off and get a 40. It was one of the best sounding third gens around here....nice very deep tone at idle....and loud as hell while driving...and at WOT...everyone just better move outta the way....

alright, so you say each side will sound equal if i use a dummy pipe? because i dont want one side being louder.
is this what that type of set up would look like?

I run a 3" in/out 40 series "Delta Flow" i guess they're called now on my 305 IROC. Another name for the muffler would be 2 chamber Stock heads and cam. 1-3/4" SLP headers and Y-pipe. The muffler is where the cat converter USED to be, then after the muffler it follows back towards the rearend and dumps toward the ground. It's lightweight, it's very cheap compared to ANY cat back system, and I get more compliments than anyone I know. It definately sounds mean. I reccomend this setup to everyone. Goodluck. If you want meaner, put a 3 or 4" Dynomax race magnum in place of the flowmaster i said above. I also run a 3" cutout BEFORE my Flowmaster for track use on the spray That also sounds beautiful.

Tailpipes suck. Dump it under the car and don't worry if your tips are set properly, or if they move every now and then or if they're clean.

so you're saying you took out your cats and replaced them with a flowmaster 40 series muffler? im pretty sure i have dual cats, would it fit under there?(i do not care about it being legal as i have someone that will pass my car) also , when the pipe from the muffler that goes out to the rear, how would i set it up to have the dual exhaust in the rear ? because right now a pipe from the cats goes to the muffler in the rear from where two pipes come out to the rear bumper. i like your idea because i get rid of the cats and i like the other idea of making a "dummy" pipe.

There was an 82 Z28 with a 350 here and it had the 40 Series. It was 1 of the best sounding cars around. I really don't get how it sounds different from the 80 Series though. Its supposed to be the same muffler just with another outlet.

you may be right about it being the same muffler but on the flowmaster website it shows that the 40 series is louder from outside the car and inside the car. not positive about that id have to dbl check it.
i found a local shop that will do a complete catback system with flow 40 series and dual 4" pipes for $400 installed. is that a reasonable price?
