What do I REALLY need for SLP headers?

For my 91 RS, the website says to get the instal kit (30022) and the catalyst adapter. Now I was wondering do I REALLY need to get this crap?

I saw on the other install kit for pre-88 vehicles that it comes with a A/C bracket, but for my year model no such bracket is necessary. So can't I just buy some bolts and gaskets just like I would for any other set of headers, or are those gaskets some specially made type that I can't get anywhere else?

And what's up with the catalyst adapter?

I just really don't want to pay $80 for some bolts, gaskets and clamps that I can get anywhere, and probably of higher quality.

Just get the Hooker 2055's. They are better than SLP and include everything you need.

Someone posted an alternate list of parts and where to get them several months ago, can't remember whom it was. As I remember though, the difference (less than $20 ?) wasn't that much. Personally though, I shelled out the cash for the install kit, but not the cat adaptor. The install kit was of good quality, IMHO, everything was there, aluminum gaskets, 12-point bolts, all other hardware. I bought the Stage-8 header bolts, and busy as I am, I haven't yet installed most of the locks and I haven't had the first leak in four months after installation. I wouldn't be afraid to try SLP's bolts next time.
As for the cat adaptor, I got mine from NAPA. I got the shortest 45* 3" elbow in the parts book, and it fit perfectly. About half price, and no shipping. I didn't coat it, given that it's right in front of the convertor I figure it won't see that much condensation and will probably last a while. We'll see. Hope this helps.

IT WAS ME!!!!

Here ya go:

Additional hints:

1. If you keep all your A/C brackets and such, you will need to reuse 4 of your long manifold studs with bolts on the end.
2. I still haven't got my exhaust leak fixed and therefore I recommend the thick "Dead Soft" aluminum gaskets, don't skimp here.
3. Hindsight being 20/20, the stainless hex head bolts look GREAT, but are real hard to tighten down due to tight clearances with the wrenches...go with ARP stainless header bolts with the small 5/16" hex heads. I saw them on TRAXXION's (Tim's) car and they look GREAT.

Brian, what gaskets did you use?

I'll probably agree with that.

I used the gaskets included in the SLP install kit, they look like aluminum, I didn't examine them much. So far, so good.

I think that I am also going to go with the hooker headers, do you think that I should wait and install my catback at the same time, or do it one piece at a time?

Yeah, what he said. It's your best opportunity to get everything aligned together properly.

Huh...OK. I'm using the Fel-Pro 1406s IIRC and I just can't get them to seal up yet, especially around #5. I must admit I haven't really messed with it lately due to the C4 brake thing but I'll get to it soon. I may have to get the dead soft aluminum gaskets...

Thanks!
