Anyone using these exhaust clamps?

Just wondering if anyone is using these, or anything like them? I have a standard U-Bolt clamp at one point and it is currently the lowest part of the car. I'm thinking something like this would solve that problem. Just wondering if they work well.

Comments please.

Thanks,

Robert

Yes, I have used them before. I currently have one of those clamps in use at the test pipe/Y-pipe joint. Should work fine for your purpose. They are pretty nice but I like the single bolt ones that are made of thicker metal better. They do a much better job of sealing as those thin stainless ones can get deformed quite a bit in some cases like when the pipe gauge sizes are quite a bit different.

Matt,

It's exactly where the Y-Pipe meets the back half of the exhaust under the passenger side that I'm having the problem.

Do you know where I can get the thicker one that you mentioned? Make/part number would be helpful. I'm having to try and get something mail order, as I'm currently in the UK and daon't want the current situation to go on until next year.

Thanks again

Robert

Well I know Mufflex includes them in their exhaust systems but I don't know where to get them beyond that.

The other thing is that Mufflex cuts a slot out of the outer pipe that allows it to compress and seal against the smaller pipe inside it. That combined with the thicker and stronger band clamp works very well.

You could probably call Mufflex and see where they get them. Maybe you can get those thinner ones to work better if you cut a slot in the pipe too - I never tried that with those, I just cranked the bolts down as tight as possible and it still would leak a little.

You mean those crappy accu-seal clamps? My brother had those that came with his mufflex y-pipe for his long tubes. got one out of all of them to seal. He ended putting a few welds on some of the joints and using the old fashion clamps on the rest. Not the prettyest clamps, but a helluva lot better IMO. I also like the stainless band clamps, they dont crimp the metal so if you have to take it apart you can.

Hmmm... That's odd. Worked awesome for me - better than any other clamps I have used but that might be because they ae used in conjuction with slotting the pipe a bit too....

If your Bro has some and doesn't want them anymore maybe you can hook RMK up with one????

I think they're crap too. I don't really care too much about the sealing part. It's just that they are very weak. They hold all the intermediate piping on my Mufflex just fine. The muffler however has thicker metal, and the clamp just isn't strong enough to hold the pipes together. I've had both the Flowmaster and the Spintech muffler so it's not the muffler's fault, even with the slit. I had to tack weld the muffler in place after each falling off going down the road!

Hmmm... Guess I better keep an eye on my muffler ! I dunno, seems like they have worked so far for me but I haven't had the system on the car that long. I think they would be the ticket for what RMK is having trouble with though....

BTW, man does that 4" system make the car sound MEAN

Mine came with them and now I'm only usuing 1. The only one left is where the pipe starts to go over the axle. That way I can remove the system easily to drop the tank. All the rest of the joints need something stronger, especially the muffler area.

Oh yeah, you can get them at Summit and Jegs.

Yeah, keep an eye on it. That scared the $hit outta me when it fell off

Actually the Mufflex 4" which I originally put on included the dual out Spintech was quieter than my old Hooker 3". Then I traded to a single out Flowmaster. Better, but not like my Hooker. The quieter exhaust was due to my weak engine though. So I put the cam in that I planned on installing when I get my heads. WOW! Did that make a difference! Sounds rediculous. I've heard many modifed single exhaust 3rd and 4th gens and this one's definately unique.

Thanks for all the comments. I'll have a search through Summits web page on Friday night when I have more time. The ones I mentioned were an easy find as they were in their printed catalog.

I'll probably order one of each design and see what I prefer then post my own comments.

Thanks again

Robert
