Vortex header inserts

Hey all-

I just bought some hooker shorties, and am throwing around some exhaust ideas. My favorite one involves the headers, turndowns, then nothing This might be a little to much for my neighbors though, so I'll need some way to quiet it down some. I was doing some searching and found these things calledVortex header inserts. They say that you just put it in the collector, and it deflects the sound waves and cancels much of them out. In theory, it sounds great. Very similar to wiring speakers out of phase 180 deg. Does anyone have experience with whether or not it actually works though? A sound clip would be most helpful too

I know resonation and noise will be horrible inside the car, but I don't care. I love it. As long as the gasses aren't pointing at fuel or brake lines, I'm all good

Thanks for the help guys,
Matt

I have been thinking of doing the same thing myself with my Headman LT's. I was thinking about getting the Car Chemistry 3-dsic insert thing and then running a turndown that pointed at a 45* down angle to get the gases away from the car. It seems good to me, but I don't think it is very legal... still dunno what to do.

Legal Schmegal, does it matter?

Those summit ones say that you can stay track legal, I think most that have a sound limit are 96 DB. That's not too insane...

Luckily, out here we still don't have emissions and as long as I keep the revs low around town the cops are pretty good about minding there own buisness. Only one sound violation ticket from a small town nearby from when I had my 92 camaro straightpiped.

Within the next couple weeks, I'm going to try just the headers and turndowns, and if it is to loud I'll get the inserts and record a soundclip for ya.

Thanks for the reply

Yea i wanted to do the same thing but i called jegs about the disk inserts and they have to be welded in but they sell the cone inserts already installed into a turndown pipe.

Slightly off topic update: I removed the old exhaust and put on the headers today, and fired it up. It;s freaking LOUD It set off my dads alarm as soon as the motor fired, so needless to say I'll be doing some sort of exhaust. I don't know if the inserts will be enough without hearing some experience from someone who has them, so I might look into doing a dual exhaust setup like *****'s.

hmmm.... If that's just those baffles welded around a dimpled pipe, that doesn't look to difficult to duplicate with scraps I have laying around here. Something else for me to check out I guess

While your at it, make an extra set for me. But if you find they are too loud, put a 4th layer of baffles on. I am bout to say F-it! and just go all out with every non-street legal thing I can find... I am already half way there, but this would just be too damn obvious to get away with.

Hey, if you are doing headers, turndowns, then nothing... why not get long tubes?

I was going to, but then I found a great deal on these shorties. If I ever go all out, I'll sell these and buy the long tubes.

wow this is neat....
the 2 disk is like closer to 'open headers', while the 3 disk is closer to 'street muffler'

I decided on the dual exhaust. Today I got six 2 1/2" OD 180 deg mandrel bends, 34' of 2 1/2 ID pipe and two 12" glasspacks.

I'm going to run the pipe down the stock location, and have the tailpipes exit in the stock location. I'm going to try and put the mufflers where the cat goes.

that is a big step going from just headers and turndowns and nothing else to a full muffeled exhaust exiting out the stock location, lol

I was completely blind-sided by how loud it was. When I did the engine swap in my girlfriends car, I ran it with open manifolds. It was loud, but no where near this loud. I was expecting something like that, but a little crisper. I idled into my neighborhood tonight, without touching my gas at all, and my parents could still hear me from a block away I like it, but it might make my neighbors not like me... ( a few are nice)

Anyways, I think the duals will give me the sound and tone I want without the massive volume. I'll try and take a before and after sound clip and post it up. Should be done by sunday.

Take care guys,
Matt
