I'm an emissions inspector -- with a gutted CAT!! hehehe
EGR (Exhaust Gas Reciculation) - it's a valve with a diaphragm that opens and closes and runs on a ported signal from the intake. It takes inert gas that's already been cumbsted in the chamber an pours a little bit back into the intake manifold to be burned up and basically "waters down the whiskey" and cools off the combustion temp. therefore reducing Oxides of Nitrogen. On carb. engines it's in the very back inbetween the air cleaner and the rotor tucked way up under there. It looks like a little pancake thingy.
AIR (Air injection Reaction) - your air pump (aka smog pump) pumps air into your CAT as well as the exhaust manifold to increase the temp. and help burn up the gases left over after the combustion process. Whenever you add air temp increases. Your AIR/PAIR/Smog Pump system consists of a diverter valve, checkk valve, and lines. Whenever you have a problem with backfiring 9 times out of 10 it's due to a bad diverter valve. The divereter valve acts as a one way street, allows air to go in and prevents hot exhaust gas from going back into the air pump. When you notice the hoses from your divereter valve and check valev burnt up, it's obviously not doing it's job allowing the exhaust gas back through and burns up the valves causing backfire
Hope that was of some asssitance.

Well I'm not sure how you would take off the EGR unless you had like a flat plate built to bolt on to where it bolts on to the intake manifold and then block up the hole it pulls echaust in from.
And you could take off the air pump and cut off the air tube to your CAT. You would probably have to get a new CAT and you would probably need to get new exhaust manifolds.
I'm really not sure how would else you would go about it.

WHOA! SWEET! You make that?
Ya know if you take a hack saw and make the end into a point and you ram it intot he CAT it'll be a lot easier than suing that blunt end. Just an idea

yea good point. the reason this works so well is because its off center so it wobbles around and breaks everything up and i took the end to my bench grinder and gave it a little edge.

o yea! the cat is gutted and the friggin exhaust sounds 5X meaner than before. i hate cats! i just got to get the y pipe welded to the cat again to make it look stock and get rid of that little leak i have. it was defenitly worth the day i put into it and the money i had to spend on new tools!

I fabricated a steel block off plate for my EGR and removed it. Used a new gasket and the plate and it works great. Didn't have to retard my timing either. I don't have a computer though, not sure if it would throw a code if you did as the computer actuates the vacuum for the EGR normally.
Removing EGR won't make your car faster either, it doesn't operate at WOT. I removed it to look cleaner under the hood.
You can also buy block off plates through...Summit I think.
