how to set up a custom dual exhaust, which is better?

alright so im planning on welding together my own header back exhaust system after i decide on my long tubes.

whats the difference (sound, performance, etc.) between an H-pipe and an X-pipe?

which of the following muffs would sound much more like a high performance race car (loud deep roar at full throttle, nice rumble at idle) flowmaster 40 series or dynomax welded ultra flow oval?

what is the size of the collector flange on the hooker supercomp long tubes?

I have never heard an x-pipe so i couldn't tell you the difference, but alot of the sound comes from whats done to the motor(compression, cam size....) the size of the collector should be 3"

X pipe quiets an exhaust down a lot, not sure about an H pipe but I would imagine it has the same effect.

the X pipe is the prefered way to go, it flows and scavages better. that being said, and H pipe, or some kind of cross over, is much better than having seperated duals.

it can be done with some effort, and fab work. i have a good friend who is running long tubes, x-pipe true duals, and a t56, all on a firebird that is lowered about 3"

but it took him alot of work to do it. and beleive it or not, the collectors on the headers are the LOWEST point of the whole system. you'll have to make a cross member for the tranny that will allow the pipes to run along side the transmision in the tranny tunnel, then locate the X just before the yoke, where there is more room due to the tailshaft.

i am probably not describing it very well, i will see if i can get pics from him.

also, why would an h-pipe or some sort of cross over be better than just seperate duals?

does anyone know what the sound difference of this set up would be than seperate duals?

Better sound quality imo. I have dual 2 1/2" with an x pipe, and it sounds really mean WOT but fairly tame at idle. Also, the x pipe got rid of a lot of annoying pops and what not I was getting with single 3".

the cross over is better becuase it maintains even pressure, and the pulses can scavage the other side of the system.

I had duals w/ a h pipe, and bullets, and my collector flanges were the lowest part of my system. I had a custom trans crossmember made when I went from auto to t56, and the shop that welded my crossmember for me decided it would be a good idea to cut the center out of my h pipe and weld caps on it to clear the tranny instead of checking w/ me. Right now the car is back appart, but my plan is to put an x pipe in it right were you said your friend has his in front of the yoke. If you take the time to get everything figured out you can have good ground clearance.
