Hedman headers + Y-pipe alignment - help!
Hi, I'm asking this for my brother...
He ordered a set of Hedman headers 68481 and Y-pipe from ACS. Well, the coating looks great to say the least. They even did his Y-pipe for free because they were sent the wrong headers by Hedman! So no complaints at all with ACS.
But the question is, where the Y-pipe meets the header, should not there be a flange on header and Y-pipe. The deal with his is this. On the bottom of both headers where they connect to the Y-pipe, there is no real flange. Instead, its more like a bulge. The Y-pipe does have a flange though. The gaskets seem useless because they wont even fully come together it seems. I havent seen a setup like this, and I would have thought they would be the same as my headers (I have hedman's too except the AIR tubes like his) and mine have a flange to connect to the Y. Can anyone comment on this. If needed I can draw a little crappy pic of what it looks like, but I'm hoping someone knows what Im talking about and its right so he dont have to send them back, it would be a real shame if they were flawed!
Thanks!
Ben

Doh
I just talked to him today, I was trying to get him to get working on his car (want to get his car outta the garage so when I come home I have the garage to myself
). I told him to try and hook it up again and see whats up for sure, and I said I'd ask here on TGO, but he didnt tell me he already ran a post on the topic. And I didnt see it in the recent topics. I'll respond under his post to keep it over there.
Thanks!

I wonder why the two sets of headers are different tho? Mine are flanged. So his basically just set in the flanged part of the y-pipe and are held tight by springs right? Seems like youd have a leak, but of course I dont know if there'd be enough pressure inside the system to blow the exhaust backwards out the opening...
a word from hedman hedders
hi, Ben. sorry to hear that your brother is having some difficulty. My name is marc lewis, and i am the marketing director for Hedman Hedders. I stumbled on to your posting when i was researching some of the reports for our hedman web site.
I am not technically oriented with the automotive end, i do the marketing end, but i am pretty certain that the connector you are looking at is what is called a "Ball" flange. It doesnt use gaskets, but when the ball collector is bolted up to a Y-Pipe that has the female end of the collector, they two ends seal tightly, and much better than a gasketed seal. I attached a close-up of the ball flange. Hopefully, we are talking about the same thing
If he is still having trouble, you should have him contact the tech dept, and they will help you guys out. their email address is techsupport@hedman.com. to call them, you can call (562) 921-0404.
As far as the initial problem of the wrong hedder being sent, i am clueless. Since Hedman does not sell direct to the consumer, your order may have been handled by, as many as, 2 companies before getting to us. Whatever the reason though, our apologies. The end result WILL be more power for your bros car.

Mr. Lewis,
Thanks for responding! I was only recalling that from memory of only briefly looking at the connection points, but I think what is pictured is what he has. I'm glad it will work out. We just werent sure because the set did not include long enough bolts to connect the two together. Getting some longer bolts will be no big deal though.
Sorry about blaming Hedman for sending the wrong ones, I didnt mean to make it sounds like a big deal. From what my brother said, ACS claimed Hedman sent the wrong set, but I could be wrong. In any case, I only mean to say that ACS did him a great favor by coating his Ypipe for free, and no harm intended toward Hedman. We are pretty understanding of something like that happening, even if it was the case that the wrong set was sent, no biggie.
Anyhow, he has the car together now, and got it running last night, so all that needs done is connecting the Ypipe and cat, and setting timing and its done! The headers/ypipe look great and we cant wait to see how it runs!
Thanks again.

hey Marc, thanks for responding about the y pipe issue. The picture you sent is exactly the same thing as what i have. Its just the bolts are too short thats why i was wondering if it was the right y pipe to begin with. No problem tho ill just go get a few bolts tomorrow or search the garage for some. But anyhow, the car is finally running again, just gotta set the timming and connect the y pipe, which im going out right now to do. Thanks
