hooker setup

i have hooker headers and a 3in hooker cat back with no cat. It sounds great at idle or full throtle but at cruising speed it sounds like a 2.8 or 3.1 beretta or corsica. will the installation of a hi flo cat help smooth this 2.8 on steroids to a deep mellow tone?

i would of thought it should sound good with no cat and just the headers into a catback.

i would leave it the way u have because its maxium flow.

yeah a cat would hurt flow some but dude you have to hear this thing at part throtle. at times it is almost imbaresing. I more less would like to hear from somebody with this same experiance and if a cat fixed it. I think it's called rasp or something. well thanks for the advise anyhow. should I buy a hi flo cat to help smooth it out or buy a dynomax super turbo flo and stay with no cat. I know the dynomax is quiet but it does sound smooth and sound quality is what i'm after

not sure i never had a high flow cat before, went from stockers to none and am not looking back.

maybe try pulling the muffler and see how it sounds.

i am working on my pipe for the rear to delete the muffler to see how that sounds, going for more louder hopefully and sound even more meaner.

Yes a cat will drown out many horrid sounds including rasp and drone. Get a cat and don't look back. You will not see any loss on your 2.8 with a high flow cat. A 400rwhp car only sees 1 or 2 hp loss with a 3" high flow cat. Unless you have a car where a cat would be a hinderance (all out drag with 500+hp) there is really no gain to get rid of yours. Some cars just sound better with them. However, some sound better without. But you should be happy with a cat.

Put a bullet muffler in line before the hooker muffler.

thanks but I don't have a 2.8 I have a 350 tpi. I think you read the post to fast. good ifo though. i'll prob get a cat but I really like the idea of the dynomax being quiet then when you open it up it sounds like a new vette from the factory:hail:

Oh I re-read it and get it now. I still thought you had a 2.8 because of the references you made. I get it now though. The dynomax is only 2.5". Unless you are talking about their cats. They make some great flowing cats for a really good price. A 3" inbetween your headers and cat back will quiet her down enough but not nearly enough to where you can't hear her commin down the road.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but what ypyipe are you using? I'm having a hard time finding one for the hooker headers Thx.

I wish I could help you out man but I put the vette motor in with the vette oil pan which is bigger. the oil pan was tight up against the cross member so I had to have a pipe shop fab me a y pipe and the drivers side actually goes under the oil pan instead of between it and the crossmember, but it is oval instead of round under the pan so it retains some ground clearance. I have about a foot and a half of snow yet outside, someday if it melts i'll be sure to get you a pic. I think they only charged me like $70.00 to fab. I used the flowmaster "y" (NOT THE THE WHOLE Y PIPE, THEY SALE A SMALLER Y TO BE USED AS UNIVERSAL) ANY SUMMIT CATALOG SHOULD HAVE IT. it has two 2 1/2" inlets and one 3" outlet for the actual "y" and its only like 18" long. it may come in different sizes and it is the smoothest 2 to 1 you could probably get. go to advanced auto and get two reducers and have the shop do the rest. hope this helps

I definately still want her to be heard coming down the road, just looking to quiet her down a little and get rid of that awful sound at cruising speed.

A cat will give you that. I have junky flowtechs but I do have a 3" cat and hooker cat back as well. There is zero rasp and drone and you can hear me up the street. This is behind my bunk 305 to. Your L98 will sound just right I think you will suprised.

I would recommend the holley flowtech raptor mufflers. I have them on my moms 92 3.4 lumina, and it has quite a rumble at idle with these, and they flow like a son of a bit*ch. I think they're only 30$ a piece too. I bet you would like the way these mufflers sound man, I do.

since we're on the exaust topic. anybody use the stainless strap stile clamps instead of the u-bolt type. do they crimp the exaust? how well do they hold?

Those band style clamps are supposed to be really good, I think less people use them though, b/c there too lazy to spend the extra money on them.
